In FOURSQUARE GOSPEL CHURCH Nigeria, it's compulsory to hold annual general membership meeting where details of every kobo that came in was gotten, and also how it was spent. Make a little search on Google, you'll see that some Nigerian churches are equally transparent. |

In my church, The Presbyterian Church, every penny is accounted for. There is a general Church meetings at the various Parishes where Stated Annual Statement is held, and the Financial report is given to the general Church. How much were realised for the year and they were expended. Traditionally, the offerings received in the previous Sunday is listed on the bulletin of the next Sunday or on the notice board. So, if he's looking for a church that gives account of their donations, I am inviting him to attend our church whenever he visits Nigeria.... |

Pastor Igbiomie, Adeboye or Oyedepo will arrogantly tell you that they are richer than you because they paid tithe with all thier life savings and first salary of the year in January. Brainwashing at the highest level. |

ivolt: The orthodox churches are more concerned about purity, spirituality and are "heaven-focused", which don't quite appeal to a lot of people. The Pentecostals on the other hand use the promise of prosperity to deceive the people. It turns out that the vast majority of people are indeed gullible! |

No accountancy, auditing or transparency in our churches. And some pastors would tell their members that they must pay tithes in order to make heaven. How any human can arrogate himself the role of who makes heaven or not,is unfathomable. The hottest part of hell are reserved for those who make such shameful and careless utterances. |

The orthodox Churches still render accounts. At least, I'm sure of the Anglican Church. It's even published in most cases and given to members. The Church weekly bulletin also shows what was collected the previous week. Even gifts are acknowledged and announced. It's some of the new generation Churches that have issues with doing the needful. |

I was once a member of a committee in an in Church of England. At the end of the year they gave me a binder that consists all the activities of the church from the beginning to the end . I wasn't even up to 2 months in the church. They ask me to go through everything including the account and make any comments, additions or remarks. I was shocked because I have never experienced it in Nigeria |

AlbertNewton:Consider deeper life, no Nigerian orthodox church is even close to the church's level of purity and strictness. According to your theory, the church shouldn't have grown beyond a village due to its so many rules. Yet, it expanded. erico2k2: As to the theory of government failing citizens. Take the US as an example, Nigerian migrants overwhelmingly convert to protestantism when they migrate, why? These are people who aren't paupers and have nobody pressuring them on what to do with their life. Is it that they are the most gullible or stupid people? If that is your belief, how about the gradual death of orthodox churches in the US? Catholic churches are closing down at a fast pace because nobody comes for service anymore or they moved to pentecostal or so-called scammer churches. Even the UK with a state church, church of England. Many of the churches branch have closed down and those remaining are just charities with church name attached. If past events can be relied on, even the original OP will likely abandon the perfect oyibo church and go back to the scammer type or stop attending church in general. I think it is time you guys re-examine your belief and accept that the phenomenon is much more complicated than the scammer/victim paradigm you attach to it. While such reductive idea is appealing, it is inherently flawed. |
