As 2027 approaches, the political landscape in Nigeria is shaping up for another round of intense election battles. However, the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu faces an adversary far stronger than any political party: hunger. Nigeria is currently in the throes of hyperinflation at a rate so galloping, it stands unmatched by any nation on earth. This brutal economic reality has left millions of citizens grappling with unprecedented levels of poverty, worsened by a currency teetering on the brink of collapse. The precarious state of life for the average Nigerian is evident in every market, every household, and every paycheck that seems to shrink by the day.

Inflation in Nigeria has reached a dangerous peak. Prices of basic commodities have skyrocketed, with the price of staple foods like rice, once a reliable measure of food security, now so high that even the middle class struggles to afford it. Hyperinflation has eroded the value of the naira, leaving citizens uncertain about tomorrow. No country in recent history has been subjected to such a severe degree of currency instability, and this has bred a nationwide sense of desperation.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has no tangible answer to this crisis. In a nation where hunger remains the foremost challenge, what matters to Nigerians is no longer political rhetoric or endless promises. They need affordable food, shelter, and stability. As things stand, they are more likely to seek help from the party they know can bring the price of a bag of rice down to at least ₦10,000 and provide affordable housing as it were in the days of the Peoples Democratic Party. A government that can restore these basic needs will undoubtedly win the hearts of Nigerians. For most, it’s not about party allegiance; it’s about survival.

It is baffling to witness President Tinubu’s camp chasing after and raising rounds of northern politicians, seemingly oblivious to the cries of ordinary Nigerians. This strategy reflects a complete lack of understanding of what the nation truly needs at this moment. The rising cost of living continues to cripple households across the country, yet these politicians seem to ignore this critical issue in favour of political posturing. This behaviour suggests a startling level of brainlessness, insensitivity, and above all, mediocrity in their reasoning.

Hunger has become the real opposition to President Tinubu’s reelection. It is not any human opponent but rather the starvation of millions of Nigerians, exacerbated by failed economic policies, that threatens his political future. The APC’s inability to curb inflation or stabilize the economy makes their focus on political maneuvering seem detached from reality. The battle for 2027 is not going to be won by chasing political figures, but by addressing the basic needs of Nigerians. And if the current leadership of the APC fails to understand that, then hunger—not political rivalry—will be the ultimate stumbling block to Tinubu’s second term.
