Peter Obi Faces Backlash For Condemning Canada-based Igbo Woman Who Threatened To Poison Yoruba, Benin Communities

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says he received a “barrage of reactions” after condemning the actions of Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Nigerian woman based in Canada, who threatened to poison Yoruba and Benin people in a viral video.

Obi condemned such tribal and religious division while noting many people’s comments which tried to justify her actions.

He said some people explained that Sunnberger’s comments were a reaction to earlier hateful remarks made by another Nigerian, reportedly directed at people of the Igbo ethnicity, which Obi also condemned in the strongest terms.

Reacting to the comments he received on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi said, "Following my recent comment on the Nigerian woman living in Canada, who made very distasteful comments against her fellow Nigerians in Canada. While condemning such a level of tribal and religious division, I have received a barrage of reactions from people, many of who tried to justify their actions.

”Some explained that her comments were in reaction to earlier hateful comments made by another Nigerian and reportedly directed at other Nigerians of the Igbo ethnicity which I also now condemn in the strongest terms. As I mentioned then, and still maintain now, tribal tension and religious division must not be allowed to grow among us. Such divisive and hateful comments and behaviours against one another should have no place among us.

“We must remain one united nation, focused on solving the myriads of challenges facing us as a nation. We must unite against the further polarisation of our nation along tribal, religious and political lines, and focus on finding lasting solutions to the challenges of high insecurity, unbearable high cost of living and leadership failure that has continued to weigh us down. With faith in our nation, may we embrace unity and peace, so that we can achieve true progress, growth and development in our nation.”

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the Igbo community in Canada warned against circulation of false updates on the case of the Nigerian woman living in Ontario, Canada, Amaka Patience Sunnberger’s alleged threats and call for mass poisoning of Yoruba and Benin people.

The Igbo community in a statement issued by Joseph Eze, on Monday advised Igbos in Canada and beyond to desist from any form of inflammatory comments and interactions that could escalate the matter as the Canadian authorities had taken over the case and investigation was going on.

Eze in the statement also confirmed that Sunnberger was arrested by the Toronto Police Service on Sunday for questioning but was also released the same day while the case was already in court.

It's the way he went about it. It was obvious that he does not like linking his region to bad things.

He also tried to give the woman threatening genocide a soft landing by claiming it was reaction.

As I mentioned then, and still maintain now, tribal tension and religious division must not be allowed to grow among us.
Obi also said the above, but he was the same person declaring religious war during last election's campaign.

Obi always stands on the side of justice, fairness and for the poor and that is why he is the greatest politician and last ray of last hope for a better Nigeria in the eyes of the helpless poor masses traumatized by bad governance

His position condemning her is good but we should remember that justice can never be selective and there are always consequences… . Sad…she learnt bigotry, hate for fellow black people and bitterness from Agbados like akiolu, remi tinubu, olumo , onanuga, erewa, fani kayode , Omokri jeered on by people who are in habit of going on media to spread hate speeches but thankfully the Canadian police have made all of us aware that hate speech and bigotry is a criminal offense and there is no statute of limitations on it ( no time limit for prosecution of such crimes) and can be arrested for that once you step feet on their soil. Nigerian lawyers in western countries over to you to start with the petitions to police to bring up charges once those hateful animals step feet on western soils. Thank God!

Obi was not wrong in condemning Amaka statement, We all did until we found out some Yorubas and Benin people first called for killing of Igbos and Igbo children.

But start crying when Amaka tried to defend her people.

Thank God she has been released since.
