Burkina Faso Unveils New Passports, Omits ECOWAS Logo Amidst Growing Tensions by Editorialtimes: 2:01pm On Sep 05 |
The Bureau Newspaper | World News Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – In a significant move, Burkina Faso has introduced new biometric passports that notably exclude the logo of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a clear step towards solidifying its withdrawal from the regional bloc. This decision follows a military coup that brought the current leadership to power and underscores Burkina Faso's intent to distance itself from the 15-member alliance. At the launch of the new passports on Tuesday, Burkina Faso's Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, stated, "On this passport, there's no ECOWAS logo, and no mention of ECOWAS either. Since January, Burkina Faso has decided to withdraw from this body, and this is just a realization of the action already taken by Burkina Faso." The introduction of these passports comes at a time of heightened tensions between Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali—all of which are contemplating or have initiated withdrawals from ECOWAS. The regional organization has warned that these actions could have significant consequences, including compromising the freedom of movement and the integrity of the common market that has long benefited the 400 million citizens across its member states. This development occurs as Burkina Faso and its neighboring countries face increasing threats from insurgent groups linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State, adding further complexity to the region's already precarious security situation. The hand of Tinubu is just bad luck. He's the one who chased these people from ECOWAS with pride and arrogance. 6 Likes |

Ikaeniyan0: I must painfully admit that the present ECOWAS is very weak. What will it take to call their bluff? Why is Tinubu led ECOWAS pandering to usurpers of democracies?? 14 Likes 1 Share |

If Burkina Faso doesn't want anything to do with ECOWAS, it would have stopped crying about ECOWAS every other week. You claimed you have left, yet you can't make any policy pronouncement without mentioning ECOWAS. ECOWAS should emulate the EU where countries beg to join instead of the other way around. Shame on ECOWAS for foolishly doting on the Rogue countries rather than wait for the perpetual complainers to come back begging. It is only a matter of time. 1 Like |

There's no international law that prescribes democracy as the only form of government. So, meaning a police officer can even carry out a coup and become his country's head of state. So, there's nothing ECOWAS can legally do to Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. |
