NEC Gives States Deadline To Make Submissions On State Police by Veegil: 4:25pm On Sep 05
The National Economic Council (NEC) has given all states until September 9, 2024, to make their stand known on the establishment of State Police.

NEC gave the deadline on Wednesday at its meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Briefing State House Correspondents not long after the meeting held at the Council Chamber of the State House Abuja, the Acting Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, said out of the 36 states, 4 states were yet to make submissions to NEC on their stands.

As indicated by Lawal, NEC directed that the four states should make their stance on the issue known by Monday.

While the four states were not called out during the briefing, NEC insisted that after Monday, any listed which neglected to make submission would have no choice than to acknowledge whatever choice is reached ultimately.

The most recent couple of years have been overwhelmed with talks about state police, with some leaders, including Lead Representatives and regional socio-political groups such as Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, saying it would control the threatening pattern of abduction, banditry, and various crimes.

The calls for the establishment of state police prompted President Bola Tinubu and Lead Representatives of the 36 states to reach an agreement in mid-February 2024.

They agreed on state police as a method to checkmate the heightening security challenges in the nation.

A month after the agreement, 16 Lead Representatives presented their reports to the National Economic Council (NEC), communicating their support for the establishment of state police and the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to consider something similar.

From that point forward, more states have additionally tabled their positions on the issue, excluding only four states yet to make their own entries.

However, numerous individuals and groups have called for the establishment of state police, the proposition has faced a few criticisms from certain quarters.

A few persons accept that funding could be really difficult for state police as certain Lead Representatives would request an upward review of monthly allocations to their states.

Others have additionally contended that state Lead Representatives would use the state police to hound their political adversaries.

Slow and steady we will get to the nation of our dreams.
This is a very good Development.
We have a population of over 200m people,
but we have a police strength that is less than 400,000.
State Police should be created to address the internal security challenges of Nigeria

Oya now.......follow by states own electricity generations and others. State should control the resources too.

Let's go abeg.
The truth and nothing but the truth.

Governor's police against their opposition πŸ€”
You are right from the perspective you are coming from also Mytime,
We believed that Our politicians are not civilised enough and tolerant of opposing views and cannot preside over a competent and impartial police force
Cos we remembered,
When in 2018 there was a summit to consider the establishment of State Police, there was a counter argument by the late Abubakar Tsav, a retired police commissioner, that the establishment of state police will signal the beginning of the disintegration of the country, as governors would use the institution against their perceived political opponents.
State and federal police commands are also likely to work at cross-purpose.

Our additional reasons of concern are that we have very serious ethnic and religious divides in the country at this time and many governors believe that if they have their own police, they can deal with the other.
For example, the pastoralists and farmers conflicts have been intensifying in many states and some governors have clear proclivities of seeking to expel or protect pastoralists in their states, opening the doors to a new dimension of identity conflicts that would deepen the crisis facing the Nigerian state today.

Some of us at MANNA remembered back then while growing up when we use to have regional/state police back in our darling country,
But, native police forces were abolished and they ceased to exist, beginning from February 1968. Nevertheless, existing personnel in these forces were recruited into the Nigerian Police Force as a unitary federal agency of the Nigerian government.
This structure has continued to the present day.

All said and done,
It will bring more good than bad.
There are much more merits in this than demerits.

It's not a bad idea, cos that would reduce encroachment of criminals from one region to the other. Hopefully, the state police won't become tools for political oppression & suppression in the hands of the governors.

If they can start with having neighborhood watch/ safety corps like they do in Lagos state (LNSC), that would be a much better idea, to collaborate with the federal police... But let's see how it plays out...

State police is the next disaster waiting to happen to Nigeria.

It's the best thing that would happen together with full LG autonomy...... people who reason like you obviously don't know that Nigeria's problem is systemic and we can't achieve anything with this defective structure we are having.

Tinubu is getting certain things right but we know it can't be perfect from the beginning but it's never too late to start.

State policing is the right way to go,infact every southerner should welcome this....this is true federalism taking shape.....no gov can use state police against the people as those who would be used would be locals in the states where everyone knows everyone..... security operatives would reside in their domains with their families, this wil bring about better synergy between the police and the people, they would be known by the people they are protecting.....the reason politicians get away with the malfeasance they commit is because they are far from the people and can easily run to abuja for protection but with yhis new approaches together with LG Autonomy, power is gradually coming to the people.

Then you aren't ready to solve Nigeria's problems.....the neo colonialist police establishment we currently run is absolutely dysfunctional and is one of the roots of our problems as a country.....Abuja controls everything, this needs to stop.....with state police locals would be the once doing the policing, they would reside in their domains with their families and would be properly vested in the locality......the reason our leaders get away with what they do is because yhey can easily run to abuja for protection over what is happening in ikor abassi but with this new approach thats no more.

And what do you expect states Governors to do, to fold their arms and let criminals take over their various states?
No doubt , some state Governors might misused it. But state police is a welcome development.
Nigeria is under police. So state police is necessary.

Well said.
I strongly believed it will work with time, nothing comes easy just like that. So let's look at it from the fact that we have federal and state ministries, agencies and parastatals federal and state institutions, federal and state Hospitals, transportation etc. so with federal and state security police, there should be less problems with time. At least, Order from above will reduce in the areas of smuggling, robbery and kidnapping. With politics, the law establishing the state police will take care of that.

It won't be as successful as we think it's going to be. Reason for this is the tribal sentiment element, one tribe dominating the police will cause friction. So Federal character will have to play into it, in the sense that not one tribe hold sway over the other. Especially for states with multiple tribes, but their overall aim will be preservation of the state and the protection of its people. Studying Afghanistan will be a good starting point but that nation have so much similarities with Nigeria. Only difference now is that they have managed to an extent to put most tribes under the totalitarian Islamic rule.

Leaders with foresight is what we have been lacking as a country but this one seems to have the political will to right some wrongs we have been suffering for a long time......you have heard stories of certain tribes killing certain locals over land or livestock, the CP or gov can't act immediately to check them because they have to await directive from Abuja which may be delayed or may never come.....that's the problem we are facing with our current security architecture.

Govs for too long have been hiding under Abuja and pointing fingers to cover their own ineptitude now they are getting blown out of the water as more responsibility is being pushed to them, how can a gov say he can't pay 70k minimum wage and you agree with him, that's nothing but BS,if you aren't competent, leave the damn place for those who can.

I tell you, this policing move and LG autonomy are the game changers that would steer us towards wholistic development as a country especially the sub nationals......some regions are contributing so much to our GDP while some are doing absolutely nothing....we cant continue like this....... everything isn't tinubu,Buhari or Jonathan,Nigeria as a country is defective and we need to start changing things for our own good.
