5 Ways To Survive In A Toxic Working Environment by Nuru1Adewumi(m): 7:21am On Sep 08 |
No lies, if your working environment is toxic, it can slowly drain your energy, happiness, and even your peace of mind. Imagine waking up in the morning, getting dressed for work, and reaching your workplace, before starting the day, you're already feeling stressed, anxious, and sometimes even hopeless. Also, staying motivated will be very hard because of negative people, constant gossip, or unrealistic expectations. Honestly, I can relate. It's not easy working in a toxic working environment. Many people have been facing this problem, so you’re not alone if it feels like you’re barely holding on. While it may seem impossible, there are ways to survive. 1) First, acknowledge your feelings: You see, there's nothing wrong if you feel upset, frustrated, or overwhelmed. Many of us try to push these feelings down because we think we’re supposed to “be tough” or “stay professional.” But what you don't know is that your emotions are valid. Take a moment to recognize how you’re feeling and why. Because bottling up your emotions won't help you. Whether it's due to a disrespectful boss/manager, colleagues who don’t mind their business or an environment where you don’t feel valued, just allow yourself to feel. It’s the first step to coping. 2) Next, set boundaries: This is very important, don't joke with it. For example: You may find yourself answering emails at all hours or staying late because “it’s just expected.” In case you don't know, setting clear boundaries is vital for your mental health. It’s okay to say “NO” when something is unreasonable or doesn’t fit within your job description. Yes, I know it may feel uncomfortable at first, but remember that your well-being comes first. Protect your time and energy. 3) Another crucial step is finding friends: If you take your time to study your colleagues, you'll see someone who shares your struggles - someone you can trust, vent to, or simply share a laugh with. A sense of friendship can help lighten the load and remind you that you’re not in this alone. It can also make the workday more bearable. 4) Focus on what you can control: Feeling powerless is one of the toughest parts of a toxic working environment. As an employee, there may be things you can’t change, like a boss that demands a lot, or a disorganized team/colleagues. But at the same time, there are things you can control - your attitude, your work ethic, and your personal goals. Sometimes, it may feel like you're stuck - when those feelings come, just remind yourself that you have the power to decide how you react. Focus on your work, do your best, and maintain your integrity. Shifting your mindset will make a big difference. 5) Lastly, consider your long-term options: As tough as it is, there comes a time when you may need to ask yourself if it’s worth staying. See, no job is worth your mental or physical health. If you can't cope anymore despite your efforts, please leave the job. Motivate yourself, search for another opportunity, and remind yourself that you deserve a better environment. What you don't know is that, in a toxic workplace, survival isn’t just about getting through the day - it’s about protecting your mental and emotional well-being. It’s about remembering your value and knowing that no job should make you feel less than you are. Take it day by day, surround yourself with support, and never stop believing that there’s something better out there for you. P.S.
