The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has raised the alarm over the increasing smuggling of petroleum products out of Nigeria, warning that the instability in the foreign exchange market would persist unless addressed.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at a stakeholder engagement for Operation Whirlwind, organised by the Nigeria Customs Service, Ribadu highlighted the severity of the issue.

Ribadu commented, We have been suffering due to smuggling, and if we want to address our economic problems, smuggling has to stop. It is difficult because it is like cancer and eats up everything.

“It destroys us and even our security forces because of the very few individuals making profit from it and half of them are not even Nigerians.

I don’t think there is any country that suffers from smuggling like Nigeria and we have to address it now because with the trouble we are going through, we can’t stabilise Naira and if we can’t stabilise Naira, then we are in trouble.”

He assured that his office would support the Customs Service and other security agencies in their efforts to combat the issue.

Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, reported that the programme, which began on May 28, 2024, had led to significant actions.

“From May till date, the Customs has made about 27 seizures and detected smuggling networks in Badagry and Adamawa. Other activities have also improved border security and we have succeeded in ensuring fuel smuggling is reduced.

“Our collaboration with NMDPRA has also been critical and germane. So far, we have seized 500,000 litres of PMS with 7 trucks amounting to 475m. The seizures were done in Kebbi, Sokoto, Lagos and Adamawa. We have opened other axes in Kwara, Niger, Katsina and Kano.

“Because of this work, most of our officers are on death threats including myself and they sent us messages to desist from fighting, but we won’t relent because we ought to fight and ensure survival of Nigeria,” he stated.

Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, emphasised the need for continued effort in the fight against smuggling.

“We won’t spare any effort in combating the menace and this explains why we launched Operations Whirlwind and we have made some progress. However, we need funding because we spend about N230 million monthly to sustain the operation and because it is not in our budget it is not sustainable and Customs may not be able to drive it alone.

“As such, we will need funding collaboration and we intend to sustain it till the end of the year,” he added.

Nothing annoys me like when people who have been appointed to solve problems.

Just keep repeating what the problems are, Oga we all know the problems !!!

You were appointed to proffer viable solutions to solve the problems.

Dont tell us that dog bites....we all know the dog bites...we have appointed you as the dogcatcher and we are paying you a lot of money to catch the dog....Dont come to work everyday telling us how dangerous the dog bites !!

1-If a marketer is smuggling , revoke his license, all marketers should be licensed.
2-Get people to go undercover and find out who is really smuggling if not marketers.
3-If you cannot solve the problems associated with smuggling and Nigerians are in so much hardship with the fuel price and the dollar rates skyrocketing.

Then resign and let people that can do be appointed.

Maybe they should start shooting smugglers at sight> That could help to curtail this

Smugglers indirectly contribute to 10% of our total problems, especially in fuel hike and scarcity

And who is supposed to tackle petroleum smuggling ?

Is that not your duty as NSA and Tinubu's duty as commander in chief of the armed forces ?

Are you telling us it is your failures that have led to most problems the country is currently facing ?

Soon they might blame Nigeria's problems on Saidaboj and Portable for having beef with each other... grin

Lol no longer Binance cheesy

From blaming Rice importation to Cryptocurrency to Abokifx website to Binance platform to some CBN staffs and now it's the turn to blame petrol smuggling, thank God them never blame we Obidients and Ipøb, ndi eriri eri, clowns in government cheesy grin

APC is a useless party filled with confused criminals.

During Buhari they blamed Nigerians using their ATM cards to buy things online so they told banks to block it. That one failed.

They blamed rice importation, so they closed the borders and said we must eat the rice we cultivate in Nigeria. That one no work.

They blamed our old currency and said they must redesign the currency to stop bandits and kidnappers causing dollar to go up. That one no work.

They went after Abokifx website. E no work.

They went after Binance platform, e no work.

Now it's petrol smugglers wink

Trial and error government of APC.

APC is an evil Muslim party sent from Hell fire to destroy Nigeria shocked

.. anything that goes up hardly ever come down.

Once landlord increase rent they will not come down again. The last fuel increase cause alot of problem with the Nigeria economy. The damage done can not be undo. Another increase will cause another big problem. Even if the dollar crashes things will not come down again . Like rent and school fee. So Nigerians will resist anymore increase.

If tinubu cannot govern without fuel increase he better step aside and let someone else to do the job. It's not by force to be president.

You see this useless and hypocrite Ribadu?
He, as EFCC Chairman, told Nigerians that Tinubu , as Lagos Governor was corrupt. Today he has rushed to receive appointment from the ''corrupt'' Tinubu.
Now, they are blaming smugglers. How many smugglers have been caught and jailed for you know that it is truly smuggling that is the problem? Where is the evidence?
