The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has stated that President Bola Tinubu did not sign a peace accord when he was a presidential candidate in 2023.

Kukah, one of the conveners of the National Peace Committee headed by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, made this known on Sunday in Benin City during the Edo Election Security Townhall.

According to the clergyman, the committee can’t force any presidential candidate to sign the peace pact, which has become an electoral ritual in the last decade.

Kukah asserted that the failure of political parties and their candidates to sign the peace accord sends a wrong signal to Nigerians, which the opposition can easily exploit.

He said, “The National Peace Committee, what we do is not in the Electoral Act, it’s not law; it’s moral. You can’t compel people to fall in love or love their neighbour.

“If you go back to the 2019 election, the presidential candidate for the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was not there to sign the Peace Accord. And, of course, the opposition went to town, which is what it ought to be, and the next day, he (Atiku) turned up to sign.

“What is also very interesting is that the current president, when he was a presidential candidate, did not sign; it wasn’t our fault that the political opposition didn’t take advantage of it.

“It’s a pity, but we are not going to take anybody to court for not signing the Peace Accord. The only thing it does to you as a candidate is that it sends a wrong signal which can be very easily exploited by the opposition.”

cheesy

Kukah talks too much

Since the end of 2023 election, Only Fubara and Obi have said more unneccesary things

Religious leaders that are quick to dabble into trivial matters lose public respect and are easily used by any random politician

Of course he didn't. He might be flogged out by hungry Nigerians eventually.

The peace accord is a mere formality. Those who signed it still went ahead to do dirty things during the election, those who didn't sign it still conducted themselves in a peaceful manner during the election

I believe this is what the Bishop is referring to. This happened in 2022 and not 2023.

https://punchng.com/breaking-tinubu-absent-as-presidential-candidates-sign-peace-pact/

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, was absent on Thursday as the presidential candidates of other political parties were physically present for the signing of the now-customary peace pact.

However, Tinubu’s running mate, Kashim Shettima, was present at the signing alongside, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party among others.

Tinubu did attend the 2nd National Peace accord in 2023.

The presidential candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Alhaji Musa Kwankwaso, signed the peace pact, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

This is not right...

How can INEC slide away with this?

The electoral act made it clear that the peace accord is mandatory..

Tinubu didn't sign the peace accord for obvious reasons.

He did promise to snatch, grab, and run with it.

I only have pity for those who foolishly had hoped he was going to be some messiah who was going to usher in the growth and development of this country. But they didn't know that no individual has ever grabbed and snatched power criminally like Tinubu and used it for the good of the people. None

Who are those who didn't sign that conducted themselves peacefully? Is it PBAT that was running mad in Lagos with his criminal gangs of MC oluomo and Co and other miscreants in other states of the federation?

Bishop Kukah is a lying angry irresponsible priest. Am a Catholic and am ashamed of him. Tinubu was not physically present to sign but his running mate who was in a joint ticket with him, Shettima was there to sign on his behalf. What exactly is Kukah trying to prove by twisting facts? This same Kukah was so close to PDP govt during d OBJ days, infact I suspect he may be a card carrying member. Since they lost in 2015, d man has been an angry lying fellow.
