ALTERNATEID:
Asking them to publish an apology is not enough deterrent for future false publications. In fact, this decision will encourage them to publish more fake news and just apologize after months of investigation. When the media ombudsman is serious, they will impose heavy fines that can cripple the newspaper. That’s the only way to deal with fake news platforms like Daily Trust.

A heavy fine that can cripple the fake news media is the solution to fake inciting news

Not coming as a surprise to me.

Since the day Daily Trust made a publication against the drug lord, I knew this failed administration is cooking up something against them.

PIDOM is in their custody
David Hundenyi is already on their witch-hunt radar.
Watch list, not witch hunt please

the prevailing culture of secrecy in governance, as it gives the impression that government holds its citizens in contempt. Instead, the government should take deliberate steps to create a knowledge society and bring about the emergence of an informed and active citizenry.

RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE COMMISSION

In the light of the above, the NMCC directs that the Daily Trust newspaper takes appropriate remedial action and, in particular, do the following:

1. Accept without equivocation that its reporting on the issue in question was inaccurate and misleading as its treatment of the report showed a lapse in news judgement and fell short of the expected standards of the 2022 Revised Code of Ethics for Nigerian Journalists.

2. Publish an apology prominently in both the print and online editions of the Daily Trust.

3. Take the necessary internal editorial measures to prevent a future occurrence.

4. Publish the report of the NMCC in this matter within seven days of receiving it.

The NMCC also commended the Complainant and the Respondent for submitting themselves to the co-regulatory mechanism offered by the National Media Complaints Commission.
There should be monetary fines imposed on these creeps and other Journalists who have been writing and publishing a lot of fake news. Just because they belong to the mainstream media doesn't mean these few journalists and Editors should be treated like demigods and can just be allowed to mislead the public with loads of B.S. meant to incite the readers and caused a lot of reputational damage to those in government. All mainstream media organizations must be made to pay damages (after taking them to court for criminal defamation of character). Public apologies are NOT enough tbh. The FAKE stories must also be pulled off the Internet because ignorant people will erroneously make reference to all the FAKE stories in the future.

This isn't how the iconic Newswatch Magazine team of Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, Dan Agbese [Dan is the FIRST man who ever wrote that "Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, is the Best President Nigeria never had"], then Kunle Ajibade and Bayo Onanuga of the News Magazine, Odion Akhaine, and other veteran Journalists behaved back in the day. These men were and are still core professionals (for those who are still alive). I loved reading the Edo-born Dele Giwa's articles back then before his parcel bomb assassination in 1986 because they were factual and verifiable. As of today Omoyele Sowore and that Gazette blatantly publish misleading stories and get away with it. Omoyele's Sahara Reporters wasn't like this back in the day, but now, I don't trust it anymore haven been put off by some deliberately planted FALSE information and pure sensationalism in the headlines with the intent to subliminally manipulate the public just like "Gazette" and it's crappy gang of irresponsible Editor and mercenary Journalists also do.
