Four southeastern governors declared states of emergency and Tampa International Airport suspended operations in preparation for Hurricane Helen's arrival.

Hurricane Helen is now expected to make landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast Thursday evening as a powerful Category 4 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters are warning that the storm will bring "catastrophic" winds and "life-threatening storm surge" to Florida and much of the Southeast. In some areas, storm surges could reach 20 feet.

The governors of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina declared states of emergency ahead of Helen's arrival. Tampa International Airport also announced it would suspend operations Thursday.

Several Florida counties have issued mandatory evacuation orders for low-lying areas. Residents in the path of the storm are being urged to be prepared to be without power for up to a week.
