…..says Our target is to grow enough food to feed Ekiti people

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has restated his administration’s commitment to food security for residents of the state through various collaboration with investors in agribusiness and young farmers saying his target for 2025 is to record significant increase in production in the sector to feed the people.

Governor Oyebanji gave this indication while inspecting the Bring Youth Back into Agriculture Project farms in Oke Ako Ekiti, Iyemero Ekiti and Gede in the North senatorial Districts on Saturday.

The Governor who was accompanied on the visit by some top government officials disclosed that the state’s budget for 2025 would focus more on agriculture, in an effort to ensure food sufficiency and make Ekiti the food basket of the country.

While noting that his government’s deliberate investment in agriculture was already yielding the desired positive results, the Governor said his government in the last two years, had prioritized investment in agriculture, boost capacity of farmers and create a market for farm produce as part of efforts to enhance food production and tackle food insecurity.

Governor Oyebanji also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing necessary impetus for the state to thrive in agriculture and other sectors, promised that his administration will continue to provide economic opportunities for youths in the state and position them to be employers of labour.

The Governor added that the State has also improved on its agricultural policies and guaranteed the needed infrastructure and support to drive the State’s agriculture development plans, adding that his administration was looking at ways to scale up food production and make the state self-reliant.

Speaking further, Governor Oyebanji said the 2025 budget , aside focusing on agriculture and food security, would prioritize the welfare of citizens, saying his administration in the last two years had done a lot in infrastructure, stressing that he would de-risk the agricultural value chain by scaling up security, provide electricity and rehabilitate roads to farms.

“I’m superbly excited on the outcome of agriculture strategy, few months ago, we flagged off this programme, ‘bring back our youths into agriculture’ and I believe strongly that the only way to prosperity is productivity and bring our youths back to work, government has to provide the platforms for them.

“We partnered with our people and YSJ, a private sector agric company to work out a strategy of bring back our youths to agric where government cleared land for them free of charge, subsidized inputs by fifty percent. I am just going round today to see the outcome of this efforts and I am happy that it has turned round this way.

“What this has taught me is the fact that Ekiti youths are not lazy, Ekiti youths are productive, they can work and what they need is just the platform. I have always been saying it that Ekiti can rival with any states in the federation, but as a government, we need to provide the platform for people to exhibit their potentials and this is what we have done.

“Next year budget is going to focus on welfare and agriculture, we have done a lot with infrastructure, education and health, the time has come for us to feed our people and my target for next year is to grow enough food to feed Ekiti people.”

At Oke Ako Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji, while applauding the youths for their dexterity and commitment to success of the project, assured the people that his government had already concluded plans to commence rehabilitation of the road from Ayedun to Oke Ako with a pledge to also provide electricity to the town within a short time.

At the palace of the Regent of Oke Ako, the Governor assured that those whose farms were acquired and enumeration completed would receive their compensation within two weeks . He pleaded with them to maintain decorum with the investors and the youths carrying out farming in the area. He assured that no member of the community has collected any money from government on their behalf.
He also hailed the people of Iyemero Ekiti and Gede, for their support for the projects, adding that road infrastructure would be prioritized in the area to enhance movement of produce.

“Despite the shortage of rain this year, you are not discouraged, we are looking at a process whereby we provide irrigation and as well provide each of you with a pair of rain coats and boots. We will also provide a vehicle to each of the groups to allow for easy mobility and make the farms accessible at all times.

“Please note that the support I am giving you was provided by President Bola Tinubu, the state government doesn’t have that kind of resources. I went to him and I told him I want to get involved in agriculture. He gave us that support and I promised myself that when we get that resources, we will invest it in agriculture, so, from that resources, we should be able to get a bus for each group. The Governor stated.

The Youths at the various farm sites had earlier reeled out the demands from government including provision of buses to give them easy access to their farms, free inputs, agriculture loans, accommodation to the farmsteads as well as rehabilitation of roads to the farms among others.

*IT IS ONLY A CHILD WHO DOESN’T KNOW THE SOUND OF A WAR THAT WILL CALL IT DON JAZZY’ TUNE.

✍️✍️✍️

Our dear nation is subconsciously treading and charting an unknown waters with the way things are; We presently do not need a Chrystalball to tell us that we are comfortably sitting on a keg of gun powder. Permit me to express my dismay in Nigerian Citizens and further bolster the reason to fear for what’s in the offing in the nearest future.

Many a times, I travel down the lanes of Imagination and memories and a deep regret snaps me out of my unending fantasy. God has indeed been faithful to Nigeria. To start with, we are endowed with abundant natural resources at our beck and call; From oil, agricultural produce, fertile and arable lands, mineral resources, naturally peaceful people etc infact, it wouldn’t be out of place to state that God blesses us more than many countries around us. It is sardonic, saddening and sickening that our supposed blessings is a viable tool in relegating us to a pitiable, beggarly and comatosed state we have found ourselves. Where did we go wrong? We have got Oil, Agriculture, mineral resources etc yet we wallow in abject poverty while consistently sitting as the apex country chairing poverty. We used to be cynosure of all eyes; a citadel of great innovations but I seriously fear for what may chance. However, the height of capital flight and exodus of irreplaceable talents seems to be the order of the day. The western world keeps feasting on the sharp decadence that cocoons our society; we are unrepentant at showing that we are slaves to our past as we glamorously pride ourselves as the GIANT OF AFRICA with no commensurate evidence. Let me again, drum it into the ears of whoever cares to listen that the evanescence and disappearance of talents in Nigeria is fast reaching its apogee- a feat I envisage around us now. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t take note on time.

I remember vividly 2004, being an unrepentant and ardent lover of athletics,Francis Obikwelu who won a silver medal for Portugal had earlier raced as a Nigerian. He outclassed his fellow countryman. He is one out of thousands of stolen talents from Nigeria. Today, I can’t conceal my sadness each time I see how many Nigerians being fielded to race and outclass their countrymen. Information has it that the unabated exodus of doctors and nurses never struck any cord of concern in those leaders at the corridor of power in Nigeria. I pray that Nigeria, a haven of opportunities, don’t turn a desolate, deserted and habitation of mediocrity in the nearest future. Who remembers the GROUNDNUT PYRAMID IN THE NORTH; THE EVER LUCRATIVE COCOA ERA IN THE SOUTH? We are fast loosing it! Some of us with unalloyed and unrepentant passion for this country are already loosing it! Some persons are on the verge of switching their allegiance! With the unabated fluctuations and dwindling oil prices, stranded millions of oil barrels on the sea, low purchasing power of countries, plunging disposable income, gradual disinterest in the use of oil in the nearest future accompanied by other alternatives to oil, I can boldly say that the panacea to resuscitation and diversification starts today. Let us go back to those produce that gives us comparative advantage like Ginger, Cashew, Cocoa, Soyabeans, Millet, Sorghum, Gum Arabic etc

I will only take you guys seriously the day I read headlines like "FG recruits 1 million forest guards for each of the 36 states in Nigeria to secure farms for all farmers in the country" Aside that, the goal of Agriculture in Nigeria will continue to remain a menace.

Do you have a plan to deal with the Fulani terror herders whose murderous and atrocious conduct have made mincemeat of investments in agriculture in Ekiti State.

Ekiti had one of the greatest GDR growth in 2024... all due to agriculture. Sit down there and remain pessimistic and shouting epinpawa o and drinking sniper instead of asking your own state governor to come and learn from him.

very funny when people say rubbish here without verifying the news. The project is real bcus the town in particular is not far from my own area. plots of land were given to youths across the local govt, ajoni lcda which is my local govt and the town is part of the lcda, I have a brother given plots of land in the said farm and they will b paying them 50k monthly for transportation and all for helping to manage the farm. at the end they have arrangements of selling the cassava produce and how to settle the farm. weeks ago I saw a video of irrigation system in the farm and I was really impressed. myself is into agriculture this year with tomatoes and cassava production. this is one of the best decisions I made this yr. I am jealous of the achievement of brothers who started this years ago. Wise up and no be everything be lies.
