It's criminal that the average Nigerian worker can't afford a car of 10years ago. That's a very low quality of life. Smh

Then where is the pressure on the dollar coming from?

Import of petrol dropped
Import of rice dropped
Import of cars dropped

So what and who is consuming these huge dollars?

MadPolitician:
The increase in tariffs at the ports was a well thought out idea to kill off imports. On the surface, it looks like the government was operating with an altruistic mindset to stimulate local production. But when you take into consideration, the fact that there has been practically no new inventive policy to cause anything close to a "production revolution" in Nigeria by Tinubu and his gang over the last two years, it starts to dawn on you that the mafia in power, has a totally different agenda. Or maybe totally bereft of ideas.

You dont orchestrate local production by just closing boundaries and quadrupling import tariffs on essential basics. You do so by creating solid industrial banks, with warehoused funds to lend to serious entrepreneurs at reasonable interest rates, improving power, identifying productive areas where businesses in the country can have competitive advantages vis a vis foreign competitors, training the youths in different skills acquisition projects to help produce quality products that are good enough for the international markets.

We are not yet doing any of those. Even the local car manufacturing facilities, are left on their own as they fight with banks for their money. Most of the parts they use for production, are imported and these imports go through the new high imports tariff regime, thereby effecting the price of the final products locally. In essence, Tinubu is now earning less at the ports from car imports, because by hiking import tariffs, he has chased away the real importers, yet can not earn anything as taxes from any new companies springing up, because his total economic strategy is chasing away businesses, rather than helping them.
You're an economist not a "MadPolitician", this is what the so-called people he has on the helm of affairs cannot put together and implement. I am still sorry for the economic lay-men on the streets who think we are headed somewhere with all these controversial policies, especially the praise singers!
The time is ripe for the citizens to put mind together and question the ruling class irrespective of tribe or religion, whomever it maybe!!

Oga, on gumtree a UK trading site just as jiji, I saw a cheap 18 year old car for £300. The owner wanted to add to his ticket money traveling to the US, so wanted to sell for nothing. £300 is normally pocket change few years ago, so I did a costing.
Buy £300
Miscellaneous £100
Ship £1000
Ie @2150 to £1= N3,010,000
Clearing N3,500,00
Total=6,510,000!
So on a dead cheap 18 year old car you spend 6.5m. If it is a normal 5-10 year old car costing £15k you need atleast 40m to ride such vehicle!
Apc, Tinubu have completely destroyed the purchasing power of nigerians. Even banks, big companies can no longer buy brand news vehicles, not to talk of ordinary citizens. Accidented vehicles bought on copart some of us use to look down on before, now we cannot even afford them.

Even with the huge fall of naira that should make the imported naira figure increase even if the volume of imported cars decrease by half, it still dropped massively.

I'm not even sure if the total cars imported this time around was even up to 10% of before

You can't buy a new vehicle even with 500k a month salary, you can't buy used and you can't even buy Nigerian assembled. Why ? Because the customs decided to be a revenue mobilization agency instead of an arm of government meant to make trade easier. Even the Chinese who are the world's greatest manufacturers are not as dumb headed as whoever runs things in Nigeria in the past nine years. Let us continue killing trade in Nigeria with unnecessary taxes and levies
And you can't fuel it successfully

Na so o.

I used to take pride in selling clean title back in the day. Back then, cosplay was giving flooded/accidented car sellers wotowoto on this platform. Now, people can't even afford a flooded or accidented crap car, cos the cost of shipping and clearing will just blow everything up. Even used cars are out of reach. The situation is funny and sad at the same time.

The more we treat the Nigerian Customs Service as revenue generating the more trade suffers.
For the NCS their major target is to increase revenue, and this is not supposed to be so for an agency meant to facilitate trade. You don't tax heavily when you don't have stability in local production.
Imagine the Nigerian Customs posting more revenue than the entire manufacturing sector. It is laughable, and this is why the cost of things is high. When there is an increase in the exchange rate, it is immediately affected on their portal, so irrespective of when you import, you will pay the prevailing rate. This also happens when there is a drop in the rate, but we rarely see the drop happen.

With the struggling times, the Presidency through the Ministry of Finance should have pegged the exchange rate of customs to around 500Naira/1dollar, this will stimulate trade increase, but like I said NCS is not for trade facilitation but rather revenue collection.

They do not care one bit! as far as they are concerned this is their time to chop and clean mouth! If russia is able to win a clear victory in ukraine......there might be a chance for Nigeria to see real change,,,,for now the collective West have Nigeria where they want us!

What manner of mental slavery justifies his chains

Is Tinubu and other politicians clueless about your Nigeria is not a rich country mantra

NLCreator:
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has defended the purchase of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for members of the national assembly.

There have been reports that the leadership of the 10th national assembly has bought SUVs for all lawmakers.

Each SUV is said to be valued at N160 million.

The LP had asked members of the party in the national assembly to kick against “wastage”.

While responding to questions during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the former governor of Anambra said the SUVs are not personal cars of the lawmakers, noting that they are for official use.

“Let me start with the issue of Labour Party members in the house. I have actually discussed this issue with them,” Obi said.

“Surprisingly, I can tell you I heard that these vehicles are official cars. They have to use it. It is meant for office.

“So it is not as if it is their vehicle. They said it is official cars and you are meant to use it while you are in the senate.”

Obi also hinted at contesting for the country’s number one position in 2027, adding that Nigeria deserves dedicated and visionary leaders who will lead the country towards a brighter future.

Okay, let me make you cry. I bought a 2023 Mercedes Benz GLE 450 AMG in Frankfort, Germany, for $35000. It was shipped to Miami for $1050. I paid Duty destination charges of $600. Yes, $600 to clear. I wonder how much it would have cost to clear that car in Nigeria.

Fake life na when minimum wage cannot buy a bag of rice

Minimum wage cannot buy 70 litres of petrol

If you earn 300k per month as a family man, you cannot build a bungalow in the next 20yrs for this Naija neither can U buy a foreign used car

300k per month is 3.6m per year without feeding, clothing, rent or anything. It's hard for a family man to save more than 50k per month after every expenses which means only 600k per year & 6m in 10yrs. How many civil servants earn up to 300k per month?

Current Inflation is very bad, face the reality & wake up from self deceit
