Remembering Nigeria's Independence Day Through Past and Present Places

Lagos, Nigeria's erstwhile political capital, is the only city with important sites that relive the memories of October 1, 1960

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTmnfg8mhyI?si=8jKg_elyzYfZRYov

A Day to Remember; On 1 October 1960, Nigeria was granted full independence from Great Britain. The country received its Freedom Charter, on 1 October 1960, from Princess Alexandra of Kent, the Queen's representative at the Nigerian independence ceremonies.

From 'Race Course' to Tafawa Balewa Square

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMC34KhZCf8?si=WlGEIC-85Uh8LUVZ
Nigeria's first Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa announced the country's independence in his speech read at what was then known as the 'Race Course', alongside Princess Alexandria and Sir James Robertson on October 1, 1960.

Today, the main arena of Tafawa Balewa Square is used to host different public events including Independence Day celebrations on October 1 each year.

From Independence to Tinubu Square
Among the landmark monuments that commemorate Nigeria's independence is the Independence Square which was built in 1960. Afterwards, it was renamed Tinubu Square in honour of a foremost Lagos aristocrat, Madam Efunroye Tinubu, who died in 1887.

Tinubu Square is an open space landmark located in Broad Street in Lagos. It was reconstructed in 2007 to its current state.

From Colonial Prison to Freedom Park
During the colonial era, the government passed the prisons ordinance that introduced its own concept of criminal justice to the colony to keep order and protect their interests. For this reason, various prisons were constructed in and around Lagos.

Since 1960, October 1 has been a day for Nigerians to celebrate. Whether on the streets or in one of those renovated vestiges of the colonial era, it has always been a time to savour independence.

THE FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM FROM BRITAIN COLONIAL RULE:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arpys66YjFE?si=3o_lR-d1k_Ydk3sw

Having being under British colonisation after amalgamation in 1914 by Lord Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, Nigeria was to become a Republic on the 1st of May 1963.

The push for national freedom by the pan-nationalist e.g. Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello would eventually pay off. The ceremony was done under the watchful eyes of Princess Alexandria Ogilvy of Kent( England who represented Queen Elizabeth-2 ) amidst a ceremonial military parade with Nigerian Brigade of Guards
soldiers commanded by the then Captain but now late Major-General Akpode David Ejoor.

The instruments of state, governance and other official documents of independence were delivered to the new Nigerian democratic government under the leadership of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe as President and Mr Abukakar Tafawa Balewa as the Prime Minister of Nigeria in a ceremony done earlier @ the new Parliament Building adjacent the Race Course( present day Tafawa Balewa Square( TBS ).

Britain will finally grant Nigeria’s request of independence @ midnight of the 1st of October 1960 with the lowering of the Britain’s flag( “THE UNION JACK” ) and hoisting of the Green-White-Green Nigerian flag at the grounds of the then RACE COURSE which is today popularly called the Tafawa Balewa Square( TBS ) in Ikoyi - Lagos.

This was done by naval rating Salaudeen Akano at midnight of 1st October 1960. He was was part of a Naval platoon under the command of late Lieutenant Onwurah Zonyanuno Chiazor( the former Aide de Camp (ADC) of Nigeria’s First Republic President, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe ) who hosted the Nigerian Flag at midnight to mark the beginning of Nigeria’s political freedom

I ran into the above investigative report by the late famous musical amazon cum stallion - Mrs. Onyeka Onwenu's of the monumental corruption and wastage of national resources in 1984 during the inglorious Buhari military junta regime era. Meanwhile, it has been the same political scenario and trajectory since post independence that is still plaguing nigeria till date. This just confirmed that the nation is under a curse.

Watching this documentary makes me so sad, angry and teary just seeing how this nation has degenerated and how terribly worse it got up to this point. It is still certain that 40 years from now things will be even worse given the current crop of political leadership. It's a shame.

Nothing spoil.
All is well normal with Nigeria.
No where in black race are people making sense from home front to government establishments.

This fault is not in our stars but in ourselves...... Shakespeare.

It is not a matter of how long from independence. What were we before the independence?
I feel backs are the wrong people on the earth
No black will make sense till thy kingdom come.

A complete failed system in all ramification,a system that completely glorifies and encourages corruption, greed, stealing, lack of integrity,a system that glorifies crimes and doesn't punish the bigger thieves as long as you have the illegally acquired wealth to bribe or settle your way,but only punish the poor and down trodden.a system where all government institutions and establishment have completely compromised, egunje or bribe don scatter everywhere.a country where there is no sign of hope for the average poor Nigerian while the rich continues to get richer by the day.
A country caused with bad leaders where the worst in the system rules over the best around, finally a country moving in reverse,to borrow a leaf from FELA,S MUSIC

Compare it to a man at age 64, there's no truth in his mouth, ......doesn't give a damn if his kids fight, kill, or rip each other apart, his wives misuse and squander the little resources available to manage the home....... no proper coordination in his home, his children go to bed hungry and neglected every damn day. He sends his children to jail for complaining about his crooked ways, he keeps running up & down borrowing from friends abroad, he has even mortgaged the future of his unborn kids with his unending debts....no accountability for the borrowed monies and he does not want anyone to hold him accountable for his reckless and lavish spending,.....lawlessness is his daily mantra..., bandits and kidnappers kill his children on a daily basis, yet he keeps a blind eye to their atrocities, he moves around with a group of known thugs and rogues, and handsomely rewards his friends for their thuggery. He specializes in frustrating and killing his children's dreams.

Now you tell me?

Nigeria has the potential to be a giant but we allowed tribalism and religion to tear us apart

Our leaders are a reflection of the followers

The people who are looking for the opportunity to loot are more than those positions looting

If this country must be great, we need a leader who had empathy for the masses and ruthless against the evils in the society, however the "kingmakers" whose unseen hands benefit from the rot in the society would never allow that kind of person to ascend to power

Nigeria should be recolonized. Right now the military needs to take over and restructure the country. Unicameral legislature. The senate should be scrapped. States should also go, the six geopolitical zones should be the federating units. 36 states and 36 houses of assembly is a huge waste of money.

Finally, Nigerians generally need reorientation...the level of dishonesty, chaos, disorderliness and dirt is astounding.

Your claim of independence rings hollow when it is the IMF and World Bank that pull the strings of your leaders like marionettes on a stage of borrowed sovereignty. You boast of abundant crude oil reserves—black gold harvested from the earth’s womb—only to prostrate before foreign masters, selling it for scraps and buying it back refined at exorbitant prices. Is this true autonomy? You parade under the banner of independence, yet you do not grasp the reins of your own economy. Instead, you are shackled by the iron chains of debt, forever indentured to the whims of distant overlords. The land’s wealth flows outward like a river feeding an endless sea, leaving your nation parched. You are fettered not by physical chains but by the invisible manacles of fiscal enslavement, condemned to perpetuate this cycle of servitude.
