Nigerian Central Bank Says Currency In Circulation Now N4.1trillion With Only 6% In Banks

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has shown that the currency in circulation has reached an all-time high of N4.1trillion as of August 2024.

The report also revealed that currency outside the banks grew to N3.86 trillion in the month under review, which indicates that 93.34 per cent of the nation’s currency is in the hands of individuals and businesses, while only 6.66 per cent remains within the banking sector.

This trend highlights a persistent challenge for Nigeria’s formal banking system.

Despite efforts to drive financial inclusion and promote cashless transactions, a significant portion of the country’s money supply remains outside regulated channels.

Daily Trust reports that according to the data, a steady increase in currency in circulation, growing from N4.05 trillion in the previous month of July to N4.1 trillion in August, according to the Apex Bank’s Money and Credit Statistics.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had in August reported that the currency in circulation surged to an unprecedented N4.05 trillion in July 2024, marking an all-time high.

According to the CBN’s Money and Credit Data, this figure represents an 11.05 per cent increase since the beginning of the year and a significant 56.17 per cent rise compared to the same period in 2023.

Analysis of the data revealed that the year began with N3.65 trillion in circulation in January 2024, a stable figure reflecting a typical post-holiday economic environment.

February saw a modest rise to N3.69 trillion, a 1.18% increase from January, while March recorded a more substantial jump to N3.87 trillion, marking a 4.76 per cent month-on-month increase.

The upward trend persisted in April, with the currency in circulation hitting N3.92 trillion, up by 1.39 per cent from March, driven by heightened consumer spending during the Easter period.

May and June continued this trajectory, with the currency in circulation reaching N3.97 trillion in May and peaking at N4.04 trillion in June, representing monthly increases of 1.07 per cent and 2.11 per cent, respectively.

Was this not what Emefiele tried correcting that Tinubu supporters still insult him till date?

Ask yourself the sincere question, how many Nigerians are banking over 4 trillion outside of their banks or even have that in cash if not the politicians and top people in government and a few others....

Of course they made sure they spoilt the plan, the reason why I knew all Cardoso's policies will fail was that the politicians have never come out to challenge any policy he brings out like they did agianst Emefiele Naira change

So?

What does this have to do with the cost of things in the market.

Let the 3 government owned refineries start working, encourage foreign investor to invest in refineries, give licences for modular refineries, this will bring about strong competitions and thereby bringing down the price of petrol, this will inturn affect the price of commodities in the market and this will have drastic effect on the economy .

Am I the one that is supposed to teach federal government this?

Ronuites used their lagos-ibadan media to demonize emifiele for changing currency. We that worked in banks then knew he was on the right track as politicians has stacked billions of Naira & huge amounts of raw dollars in their houses therby leading to inflation. Cardoso is just dull. You wana curb inflation but you inject more money into the economy. Why not outlaw 1k, 5H & 2H notes under 6 months let our highest currency be hundred naira watch how inflation will drop by 50% as those funds will come back into the banking sector

Cashless is not for Nigeria. Which country is running cashless. A country that don't have a data base wants to run cashless. CBN face front and start giving incentives that will make people take cash to bank and still withdraw same cash from banks. CBN is not smart and lack critical thinking team. They brought new notes and asked ppl to change it without giving same value back when they ask for it and same time people started selling cash and u expect them to take cash to bank. Keep dreaming

As your banks. Are they not the first to start selling cash to POS operators, now people rather sell their cash than to deposit in the bank and the circle continues.

This is the new trend, money ain't go to the banks anymore, we keep on circulating amongst ourselves.
