Why Jesus and his Apostles didn’t collect tithes — Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has explained why Jesus Christ did not collect tithes during His ministry on earth.

Speaking during the church’s October Holy Ghost Service on Saturday at the Redemption City, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, Adeboye clarified this in response to an unnamed RCCG pastor who preached against tithing, citing that Jesus never collected tithes.

Adeboye’s comments came shortly after he apologised for previously stating that those who don’t pay tithes may not make it to heaven, also suggesting that 10% tithing is for beginners.

The pastor said, “One of my pastors went online and preached a sermon on why people should not pay tithes. I watched the sermon, thinking I would learn something profound.


“He said we shouldn’t pay tithes because Jesus didn’t collect tithes. I said, ah, Jesus was not a parish pastor, He was a world evangelist.”

He added that he was, however, disappointed because it was a repetition of what others had been saying.

“Forgive me for saying so, but it was a very shallow sermon,” he added.

In addressing the claim that Jesus did not collect tithes, Adeboye said, “Jesus was not a parish pastor; He was a world evangelist.

“The Bible in Luke 8:1-3 tells us that certain women, including Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna, supported His ministry financially.”

He further emphasised that the apostles did not collect tithes for the same reason because they were not parish pastors.

Adeboye concluded with a word of caution, referencing a fellow clergyman who had a group of women supporting his ministry, urging against gathering women solely for that purpose and highlighting the potential for moral missteps in such arrangements.

1. I will strictly regulate the proliferation of Pentecostal churches by imposing a condition of government approval and constant scrutiny by government.
2. Strict banning of pastors interfering with political and government affairs with heavy penalties including prison sentences.
3. I will impose taxes on all Pentecostal churches especially those with GOs flying private jets.
The airport they use need to be maintained with finances.
4. I will impose a government audit of finances on these mega Pentecostal churches.
If you don't like it, close your church.
Oh how much I love China.
5. I will impose a strict government control of the sale of spiritual items in Pentecostal churches.
No sales without government approval and registration.
6. I will restrict the freedom of speech of Pentecostal pastors on government matters.
These useless charlatans are known to cause societal chaos by their utterances like this Hypocrite Adeboye who prayed for his members colleagues to fall into poverty.
If all these are done with Pentecostalism in Nigeria, there would be much more SANITY and lesser social chaos.

Jesus was not a Levite, hence did not ask for tithes.

Both Adeboye and the pastor he spoke of are very wrong to say Jesus didn't collect tithe.

Jesus collected tithe as Melchizedek whom Abraham gave tithe to in the Old Testament.

It does not matter the verses since Jesus Christ never said He was Melchizedek.

2. As for titles, there are others in Scripture who hold similar titles for instance, at least one of the Kings mentioned in the book of Daniel held the title of King of Kings same as Jesus Christ. Do you equally conclude that that King must have been Jesus Christ?

Some man who happened to be a priest in the land of Canaan at the time that Abraham and his band of Mercenaries were returning from winning against the 4 Kings?

The controversy stems from the fact that many are not practising pure Christianity, but rather a combination of Christianity & Judaism.
Tithe is Judaism, not Christianity.

As far as Christ's teachings /Christianity is concerned, all giving should be done cheerfully without any form of compulsion or manipulation.
