Like it or not, Nigeria is one of the countries where things are so cheap. Even fuel at 1200 per litr is very cheap. The only problem Nigeria has is group bad leaders. They get huge pays that enable them to cope with the market reality but till now even the so called FG is penny pinching with valueless minimum wage let alone states especially where their governors are already on their second terms and have nothing to lose by not increasing salary.

This post is in response to the thread below about the high cost of fish in Nigeria. You can find the thread here
https://www.nairaland.com/8225493/see-what-experience-market-woman/1#132221604

Here are some fishes i bought fot just 12 pounds. They are 8 in number. I bought it alongside grinded ogbonno. You can see the grounded ogbonno in the transparent pack that cost about 4 pounds.

So i ended up spending 16.17 pounds in this African shop i went to. I also attached the receipt.

Guess what? The 8 fishes, i was holding one when i took d pix.. i got for 12 pounds is just an hour wage rate. This is what i am paid in just one our of working.

While converting the prices to Naira might be expensive the actual reality is how much effort is put to achieve that earning putting time factor into consideration.
Apart from holidaying/vacation i dont see what the big deal is about people that Japa.
I still love my Naija o!! Oga OP no be everybody destiny to japa, people dey here dey live better lives than those abroad so kini big deal
U have Japa'd in peace, leave us wey dey here with our bad leaders, we still dey live fine here

Just go back to Nigeria cos God never answer ur prayer lol
This comment shows you lack cognitive reasoning, where do you think mackerel comes from ? Europe of course and they're the best source of omega 3 fatty acid which is an essential need to our bodies.
There are no specified fishes or meats meant for the rich or poor abroad, that's a Nigerian thing.
Beside Chicken and beef are equally cheap in the UK, even cheaper in Canada.
Nobody eats meats or fishes abroad to validate their societal status.

Other things i got from another shop are a
pack of 5kg of rice that cost 8.99 pounds
Egusi 3.49 pounds
Salt 1.49 pounds
Tin tomato 1.99 pounds
Pack of start maggi 2.49 pounds

In fact a week i spend 35 pounds to buy all we need to use to prepare stew, soup (3 types of soup). Store all in fridge. ( a family of 3)

That 35 pounds is just about 3hrs wage pay.

Nigeria actually need an intervention at this stage. When i look how things are organised in UK
All road motorable with no single pot holes.
With high way everywhere, flyovers interlinking exis.
No single blink of light.
Security top notch. You can work 1am on the road covering several kilometres with no fear of being killed or robbed. You call police it takes less than 5 minutes to arrive where u are even in forest.

Then u wonder how is this posible to achieve.

I don't know the nature of your work in UK. But from Nigeria here I also earn pounds.

I'm not fully committed to the work because of my office work. But if I dedicate time, in a day sometimes I do earn up to £15. This is the side hustle that I used to compliment my salary. By God's grace at the end of the month 6 figure is certained

Since you're in UK you've up hand than me

I wish every legit hustler all the best in their endeavours.

Pls you're in UK, the economical home of all forms of tax. As you're contributing to build the economy of your province, don't forget to build/upgrade your home at home 🏘️ too.

May God 🙏 ease our affairs

What allowances? How many people are receiving the minimum wage in Nigeria. Even corp members were not paid last month. Don't deceive yourself, he's doing better than an average Nigerian, fuel price isn't stable in Nigeria. Those with cars can't drive, those driving are driving on a bad road. No tap water, power is irregular and unaffordable.

He goes home with nothing less than £2000 after tax in a month and can conveniently save £500 each month. Not considering those doing 2 jobs in this analysis

Mind you, that's African fish imported into the UK. Their home grown food and fruits are cheaper.

Minimum wage announced is BASIC SALARY.

There is a payslip. And one of the components in the breakdown is basic salary.

Also, Nigerians almost NEVER rely on salary.

A filling station attendant can be living in his own house. Same goes for drivers, gatemen etc

How many people use cars abroad?

How affordable is fuel abroad?

How affordable is rent abroad?

How affordable is power abroad?

How debt-free are people abroad?

The 500 pounds savings you mentioned only has value in Nigeria

I enjoy 24hours power supply. My main roads are okay.

Not everyone is as dubious as Igbos who sell fake products.

You pple even refuse to pay off the boys that serve you after many years. Instead of paying them off, you set them up and call them thieves. Then you will get them arrested so that the boys won't ask for settlement.

Because you igbos are dubious people doesn't mean everyone else is dubious.

Can you afford to rent nice apartment with, swimming pool, hot tub, gym..., drive nice luxury car, in the UK? Go on vacations at least twice a year?
If you want afford these in abroad, your family annual income go be at least $150k.

Before you can comfortably afford all the good things of life for abroad, you must be in a high paying job....
In the US, $100k and below annual income are considered poor, they feed from paycheck to pay heck.
Abroad no easy oooo
E no hard like that joor. I go to naija once a year and my one week salary covers my return ticket and I go still get like 700k naira for flexing. As a warehouse worker o with 59hrs weekly.(abi u wan argue)

£2400 is enuf for u to live outside London as a family. Ur wife's salary can even cover house rent, food and all other bills while u save urs.

I know it's not easy but don't blame the system instead look for what the system needs and look for ways to meet the demand.
There is still very high demand in health care.
Secondly, we look down on some handiwork yet they pay more than cert eg mechanic work, driver especially taxi. The Nigerian pride will not allow us do taxi job or mechanic. What will I tell home people. I have interviewed these people and honestly, if I had a choice now, I will forget my cert and become a driver. What of rail driver. Do you know that they take home more than band 8 nurse in some units and how many years will it take one to reach band 8? You may never reach 7 not to talk of 8.
Nursing is one of the least paid jobs in uk but readily available. Don't forget that blacks lose their pins for flimsy reasons more than any race every year.

Most time when I come across new immigrants, I usually lecture and advice them cos when uou miss it, it will take time for you to navigate back again and start afresh.

You know whatt !! Base on reality and nigerians renowned hustling spirit your assertions is not true

You talk about health care freely, buh you refuse to take into cognisance medical line is one profession with strigent cut off and limitations.
for instance i studied fishery in school .. can i undo that just becos health care is hot cake abroad nd i want to japa, how i wan take rewrite my life to fit into health care undecided
In Nigeria, very few nigerians have penchants for mechanic besides we dont have leverage compared to the whites, between white & a nigerian who yu go carry your car give undecided

With all the experiences i have gathered, there is no job Nigerians wont do abroad, infact Nigerians take up the low jobs other nationals avoid ... I doubt Nigerians look down on taxi driving, most times meeting driver criteria is the issue. Nigerians get pride we dey wash corpses, do security for mortuary, scavenge at dumping sites.. nah !
We at home are already use to the fact that people abroad wont tell us there real job ... the chances someone you know back home will see you washing plate is almost zero(0.4)

You are just like those motivational speakers so distance from being realistic and considerate

Bro I must commend you, you try..
Replying to some of the comments here annoys me

I have a family frnd in the UK that has 3 good Bez, bought house in the UK, built a mad house here, guess what?

He has like 2 benz, his wife does too..
They left around Dec. 2021.

Now when they were both here wife nurse, husband na one of this paramilitary, they were using a very rekecty EOD, life was a little hard so to say.

But within their 3years in the UK, they had acquired things and assets that if they were in Nigeria, maybe in 20years time sha. But they achieved within 3years.

See, funny enough, they always complain that poor UK is tougher oo this and that..

You know why? So people don't bill them, as they are still busy stocking wealth for themselves.

People like them always say, ahhh don't come to the UK oo
Don't come oo
Nigeria will still be good but they themselves doesn't want to return home, and are living large over there.

Again, I commend you bro
Thanks

You live in an apartment.
You and your wife can afford this and still have change.
If what you studied is not gonna get you employed, change route provided you don't have paper problem
Eg, you can apply for train driver apprentice training, go through all the tests and enter, once you enter, look for an opening for what you studied as you climb along or better continue as a driver.
It's lots of money and stable job.

Does train gives u sponsorship? Before i scale through to top experienced position that could guarantee u sponsorship time has gone.

So what i should be looking at is job that guarantees sponsorship anythings than that i will remain here. After all i could earn what most government workers earn in a month amd could by far earn what nurses are earning as a mayguard
Most nurses earn 1800 but there are months i work back to back to earn 3000.
