Lagos Faces Risk Of Submergence Due To Climate Change by lagosdaily(m): 9:09am On Oct 26
Lagos, Nigeria – Dr. Obafemi Kadri Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has sounded the alarm that Lagos faces a significant threat of submergence due to climate change. Speaking at the opening of the Lagos State Strategic Management Meeting, he emphasized the urgent need for swift and decisive action to mitigate the effects of rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions. Dr. Hamzat pointed out that cities like New York are already seeing residents relocate because of similar environmental issues, signaling a clear warning for Lagos.

Dr. Hamzat criticized the current physical planning efforts in Lagos, highlighting the lack of proper land management as a major factor in the state’s vulnerability to climate change. He explained that Lagos’s coastal geography, combined with its dense population, makes the city particularly susceptible to flooding and other climate-related disasters. The Deputy Governor stressed that rising sea levels and extreme heat pose existential threats, not just environmental concerns, and called for immediate attention to climate adaptation measures.

He further urged the state government to incorporate robust climate adaptation strategies into its future development plans. Additionally, Dr. Hamzat stressed the need for judicial cooperation to address land-related challenges, calling on the judiciary to support reforms that ensure the safety and future of Lagos residents.

Echoing these concerns, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro SAN, highlighted the need for improved efficiency in the justice system. He revealed that over 6,000 cases involving the government were pending as of July 2024, stressing the importance of reducing litigation and focusing on alternative dispute resolution methods to ease the burden on the courts.

Deputy governor demarketing the state. How many people will want to buy ordinary land after this let alone investment.

The truth is many places all over the world faces thesame risk due to climate change. That's why flood issue even in America has been uncontrollable

Many cities have sunk in the past, many like Venice, jarkata, Miami, Bangkok, Rotterdam etc are currently being submerged and many more will sink in the future. Yeye!

The solution to this problem will leave many people homeless and crumble businesses. Lagos is too congested, and people are still filling swamps to build.

That has always been a clear and present danger for decades...!

Coastal cities and towns face such risks.

Anyone who has been visiting the bar beaches for years will clearly understand this reality.

And our government is building coastal highways without considering climate change.
My candid advise to motorists is to beware of coastal invasion and fun seekers to desist from lagoon.

It’s a bit too late Mr Deputy Gov.
Lagos left the blueprint a long time ago when selfish interests propagated growth towards epe instead of badagry. Dry land that should’ve been developed was left for dredging.

I have said it here before that eko Atlantic is one of the biggest contributors to the ecological crisis faced in Lagos asides global climate change.

Baxilexi:
A story of if education is expensive try ignorance.

The commissioner, if knowledgeable should consult before demolishment.
The Netherlands, Italy and some European countries live with water, there are levels to this. A square peg in a square hole will save Lagos state.

It’s time to revisit the blue print.
Lagos needs drains the size of a full grown man, as well as buffers that can hold millions of liters of water.
The commissioner can make artificial lakes that would pose as reservoirs and also site attraction.

When the state was generating funds from omonile, they didn’t think right then. The state government sold sidewalks, parks etc.

Lastly, when everyone is ready for the discussion of the environmental impact of Eko Atlantic then the solution will begin.

Obafemi Hamzat talked about some New York residents relocating. About 40 percent of the world's population live within 100 kilometers of the oceans and this provides insights into human settlements.

Even Florida is experiencing the same thing with Miami experiencing floods due to a rise in sea levels. Some roads in Miami are now being elevated in some areas but as it stands, ONLY a miracle will save Miami from being submerged down the road.

Lagos and other coastal states of Nigeria have to move fast and Lagos can look at the model used by the Netherlands to contain floods and avoid being submerged. There are other strategies being used to break the speed of ocean waves (NOT the use of rocks) in order to prevent the erosion of the coastlines. Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States are especially susceptible. I saw horrendous videos of many oil and gas-rich Ilaje ancestral communities on the Atlantic Ocean section of Ondo State that had already been submerged out into the Atlantic Ocean. Same thing too with the videos that I've seen of many Ijaw fishing communities that have been submerged by the Atlantic Ocean in Bayelsa State. These folks have had to migrate to other settlements in Bayelsa and elsewhere away from the raging waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

China, the U.S. and others must be committed to reducing and eradicating carbon (CO2 emissions) which are primarily responsible for this climate change. For those who don't know, cows produce a lot of gas (fart) daily because they have a big digestive system which also contributes to climate change. So, that has to be looked into. Cutting down on cow meat and cow milk while gravitating towards the healthier white meat from poultry would help. Period.

All this big speech ... but what has he recommended? ... absolutely nothing. Not a single suggestion . Nobody is leaving NYC because they fear the city will be flooded ... and only parts of the city are at sea level. Lower Manhattan...Wall Street and the entire Financial District is part of the flood prone area .... but what are they doing about it? ... building a high embankment and flood gates in the area. He didn't know this but he knew people were leaving the city. Again.....this is another one that should be dragged from office and ehmmm .......
