In a stark revelation about Nigeria’s aviation industry, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed that over 100 airlines have collapsed in the past 40 years.

Keyamo made these remarks at Air Peace’s 10th-anniversary celebration, held in Lagos on Saturday, highlighting the challenges faced by carriers in the country.

“More than a hundred airlines have gone in the last 40 years,” Keyamo stated, referencing once-popular airlines like Concord and Bellview that couldn’t withstand market pressures.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s airlines rarely survive beyond a decade in good financial health. “If you look at the history of airlines in Nigeria, you’ll discover that it’s difficult for them to survive 10 years and still look healthy,” he explained.

He assured attendees that the government is keen on developing policies to create a sustainable future for the industry.

Keyamo attributed Nigerian airlines’ high mortality rate to systemic challenges despite the nation’s potential as a top air travel hub.

He pointed to findings from Boeing showing that Nigeria generates 80% of Africa’s domestic air travel, with the busiest Lagos-Abuja route. “We have the population, we have the traffic,” he emphasised. “So it is surprising that if we have this traffic, why are the airlines not surviving?”

Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema took the opportunity to reflect on his airline’s decade of success, attributing its achievements to a vision rooted in national development rather than profit.

“Air Peace is a product of deep thinking and a desire to make a far-reaching impact in a country I love deeply. Profit was not the primary driving force behind its establishment,” Onyema said.

Keyamo commended Air Peace for its resilience, presenting it as a potential model for aspiring carriers in Nigeria.

Hmm

Hmm

Meanwhile apc members like the ones below are agitating for new airplanes for their lords and masters.

Instead of agitating for polices that would save our domestic airline industry

Kukutente23:

Don't you know that when a plane is ageing, it does not see road well to see foreign object and avoid em

The VP is a critical national asset. Nigeria may be poor but were too big for our VP to be going about in a rickety jet

We can't have 129m poor citizens and still have a poor VP

Therefore we must raise taxes to buy new planes for tinubu and shettima
SilasGreenback:

Abi ooooooh.

Lets buy it for him and continue to make sacrifices. We need to man up and stop crying about inflation, as unfortunately, things cost money, and we should stop wanting everything cheap.
nedu666:

We don't pay enough tax. We should pay market price so that govt officials will see money to buy new jets

Apc. Now you can walk to thirty destinations

Thankfully they have all been replaced with Nigeria Air since 2018 when Buhari and APC revived the national airline unlike PDP that got Richard Branson's Virgin to float a national carrier involving Nigerian private sector without any expenditure from their capitalist administration.

Nigeria launches national carrier that it hopes will fly to China and India
Published Wed, Jul 18 2018

Nigeria has released details of its new national carrier, Nigeria Air, which is due to be launched at the end of this year.

The Nigerian government will own no more than a 5 percent stake in the airline, which it is touting as “fully private sector led,” according to a tweet by Tolu Ogunlesi, a communications official.

Nigeria Air will begin by flying domestically in Nigeria and the broader West Africa region, aviation minister Hadi Sirika told CNBC via telephone on Wednesday. He added that the airline had looked at 81 potential destinations, including to China and India, to which it would expand routes “when the time is right.”

Sirika said that there was a “total absence of efficient air transportation” currently in Nigeria and across West Africa, and that the sector was not adequately serviced by private firms alone. He added that Nigeria Air was also designed to “provide employment for people.”

ICYMI: The N85bn fraud: How Hadi Sirika conned Nigerians

The former minister had in 2018 unveiled Nigeria Air as its new national carrier at the Farnborough Air Show in the U.K. This ceremony had raised dust as many wondered why the unveiling of Nigeria's own airline was done in another country.11 Jun 2023

Profit not the motivation? How can some of us believe this please? If profit was not the motivation, what has sustained the airline? If Al Barka, Concord, Okada, Bellview, etc we’re making profit, would they have packed up?

Again he talked about national interest. As in really? I think national interest came to play when the airline started to gain prominence and government playing its role to promote the airline.

In all we must commend the man for his resilience in the face of all challenges. He did very well.

I was looking out for your comment. I'm sure your position is that since they couldn't meet up they should go into agriculture? grin

God may never be foolish, broke or extremely tribalistic to support bad leadership blindly the way some APC goons are doing.
