LASUCOM to Become University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) is set to transform into a specialised medical university, soon to be known as the University of Medicine and Health Sciences. This development was revealed by Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, at a recent stakeholders’ meeting.

The Lagos State Executive Council has approved the draft law for this new institution, which is now ready for submission to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences will provide medical training across multiple clinical facilities throughout Lagos State:

Primary Clinical Site: The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) will serve as the main clinical training site.
Clinical Network: The university will leverage a network of clinical facilities across the IBILE Administrative divisions to support comprehensive training for medical professionals.
Main Campus: Located in Ketu-Ejirin, Epe, the main campus will host administrative offices and offer basic medical science programs.
Government’s Commitment to the Project
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, reiterated the government’s commitment to this initiative, emphasizing its focus on completing the campus and training facilities. The government aims to boost the number of trained medical professionals in Lagos by enabling clinical training in both public general hospitals and private hospitals across the state.

Support from LASUCOM Management
Prof. Abiodun Adewuya, Provost of LASUCOM, expressed full support for the transformation, noting the college’s readiness to work closely with the government on this project. This initiative aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision of creating a standalone medical university to strengthen Lagos’ medical infrastructure.
