I thought the tolling money had been added to the price of fuel. That was done during OBJ's regime, I can remember. That was why they demolished all tollgates all over the country then.
It was said, for every one liter of fuel bought there is an equivalent amount paid for road maintenance.

FYI, every government in the world struggles with providing and maintaining infrastructures. That's why tax is essential. I am sure that you will raise eyebrows the moment government starts demanding you pay the appropriate tax to build and maintain roads.

Nigeria FG will have the largest roads because they share more from the resources of the federation than the other country's leaders does. You cannot be collecting monthly 53% of the accrual to the country while the 36 states plus FCT share only 47% of the accrual to the country and don't have more roads to construct. If they don't have more roads, who will?

What is worth doing at all is worth doing well. Majority of all the Federal Roads are sub standard road buildings and that is why they break down and collapse just not too long after their constructions
Going back into history, Obafemi Awolowo the then Premier of Western Region in the 50s.
All his road construction systems were super standard.
Even up till today some the roads are still unbreakable.
See the then Ibadan _ Ijebu Ode also see Ife _ Ondo and Songo Ota to Benin Republican Region border road.

Well, when you buy a brand new car, you don't expect it to be operating as it was when it rolled off the assembly line forever.

You keep it in good repair by continued maintenance and upgrades if need be. And that requires something called money.

That the whites built something does not mean it would remain 'forever new'. I used to live in a house that was 'built by the whites' so to speak when I was growing up. And at the end of the day, when my family moved out, the house was still in good repair, because my father spent a sum of money over the years ensuring it remained as it was.


That is why South Africa has toll gates...to get money to keep the road as good as new for as long as possible. Just as my father had a job to get the money to pay for repairs and maintenance on that white man built house I grew up in.

We have a lot of infrastructure that was built by the whites which has rusted and broken down because the amount of money Nigeria earns is not enough to maintain and upgrade such infrastructure. And before you start....corruption makes the little money we earn smaller (which is why I believe that any corrupt person should be shot dead without excuses, and why I have not been exactly happy with our democratic system...it is just that the army was even just as bad, with the added problem of no civil rights...so lesser of two evils and all that).

That is where taxation comes in.


And the annoying fact is

1. 20% of government revenue comes from tax

2. 80% comes from oil...that in the long term is not enough for a nation our size

3. Most tax dissapears into the 'black sector' of corruption and stealing, and not into government coffers.

4. And the governments past and present have been too scared to do anything about it, so we rely on oyel money and when it runs out, we borrow. All because properly regulated taxation is apparently a tool of the IMF to suck your blood and drain you, or a plot to put UFO in charge of everyone, or something.



At the end, you probably would mock me. But whatever anyone thinks....you want good stuff to last long enough, you got to pay enough money to do so. You cannot buy an new car and expect it to run like new forever. Every car, and indeed everything built has a depreciation rate...and it costs money to slow the thing down

It's up to us to decide how much money needs to be paid.

Try to drive by road from Lagos to Benin City to Okene, Abuja then to Kano and see the hell people are living in. Everything isn't rhetorics because of politics - people are dying!
