The Diabetes Association of Nigeria, DAN, has warned that six million Nigerians with diabetes are facing existential threat, following the skyrocketing cost of healthcare.

National President, DAN, Dr. Ejiofor Ugwu, in a statement to mark the United Nationsal World Diabetes Day slated for November 14, added that 30,000 to 40,000 Nigerians die annually from the condition.

According to Dr. Ugwu, “About 6-8 million Nigerians (5.7 percent) have diabetes. This figure represents a tip of the iceberg as two-thirds of diabetes cases in Nigeria are still undiagnosed due to lack of routine screening.

“Diabetes kills an estimated 30,000? 40,000 Nigerians annually. Managing diabetesi n Nigeria is faced with alot of challenges including a high level of poverty, low diabetes awareness, shortage of manpower especially diabetes specialists, unhealthy cultural and religious beliefs, and inadequate diabetes care facilities.

“In the past one year, the cost of diabetes medications and consumables has gone astronomically high, beyond the reach of most patients. Insulin vial for instance, which used to cost about N4,000 now sells for about N18,000, representing over 400 percent increase.

“This poses significant barrier to optimal diabetes care in Nigeria as majority of patients can no longer afford care, resulting in increased diabetes complications and premature deaths.”

On the way out, he said: “The Federal Government should as a matter of urgency, subsidize diabetes medications and consumables to make them more affordable to the teeming population of people living with diabetes in Nigeria

DAN recommends complete tax waiver in importation of diabetes medications and consumables

Sugar sweetened beverages tax which was stopped in June 2024 need to be revived and there should be legislation to channel the funds accruing from it to diabetes and related non communicable diseases prevention.

“There is a need for a well conducted national survey on noncommunicable diseases as soon as possible. This will provide accurate data to guide health care policy making,” he added.

Primary Health measures like this should be addressed by the minister of health.
Can Tinubu add this man to the next round of Ministers to be Replaced ?
Sharing money to Primary Healthcare Centers, without proper supervision of judicious use will just lead to embezzlement
We have not heard from him advocating better healthcare for indigent and vulnerable Nigerian Citizens.

Since the arrival of Tinubu with his 'Bolekaja' economic policy prescriptions, it has been all gloom and doom.

Every problem that involves health has a natural solution, but the white made you believe they don't work so that you'll focus on their medicines.

When Nigerians manufacture that same medicine, they say it's not certified. They make you look down on your local and effective solutions so that they'll have a market to sell theirs.

That's how they made African tradition that made everyone abstain from crime look evil and brought in religion and democracy to ruin our peace and create business opportunities from unruly behaviours that never existed in Africa.

They said to themselves, "If there is no crime and eating unhealthy in Africa, we can't sell our CCTV cameras, GMO food, medicine, and other gadgets. So, let's destroy their minds first so they can destroy themselves and run to us for help (since they see us as superior) and we'll use things we stole from their land to help them and they'll pay us with the money they spent months or years labouring for. In the end, they'll achieve nothing in life and will be depressed till death."

What I'm trying to say is, there is a native solution to every health problem, as long as it's not technology. Your job is to dig and find it.

Most times, words can mess up our minds and make things that work become ineffective because the mind is already preprogrammed to resist it and see it as fake or too local.

"How can a fine girl drink something that dark and bitter?" — referring to liquid from a squeezed plant.

Let the poor breath.....

What has the discovery of crude oil truly brought to Nigeria and Nigerians—progress or misfortune? Only God knows. Many countries with fewer natural resources than Nigeria enjoy a better quality of life than we do. cry cry

We pay taxes like every other country, but what do we gain from it? Education is no longer free, not even at the primary level. Government-provided water supply is a thing of the past, healthcare costs are high, and even after spending millions on a degree, creating a job for yourself often becomes the only option, unless you want to work as a POS agent— lipsrsealed lipsrsealed embarassed
At this point, only God can save Nigeria—not even Nigerians themselves

Minimise intake of sugar and carbs and then exercise regularly. Diabetes may not remember you if you do so.

Why should they tax sugar? One of the biggest misconception is that sugar causes diabetes.
Type 1 is an autoimmune disease
Type 2 is caused by obesity

Diabetes is a self-inflicted disease. Period! Everyone with the disease is a food/sugar freak who finds it difficult to let go. If you want to argue, go ahead, but check them all well before you do so. How many of them gave up sugar easily? How many of them can easily give up high glycemic index foods? "Dem wan chop swallow na and put meat, round about, panmo, etc".

Start a garden, eat organic food, stay away from processed sugar and high glycemix index food, and you can manage well or reverse it if not irreversible.

But they will keep arguing. "Na dem get their wahala".

How can it be free when there is overpopulation and corruption? Decay is inevitable, but not until we have a sustainable structure in place. How can you freely care for over 300 million people with a GDP per capita of less than $4000? Even if we remove corruption, it will take at least 5 years to start balancing everything. It is as if you do not understand what is wrong with Nigeria.

The incidence of Diabetis is expected to surge as a majority of individuals are unable to afford a balanced diet and rely on starchy foods for sustenance. It is evident that the government is turning a deafening ear towards the current state of the nation.

Diabetes isn't just about eating sugary foods. It is mostly inherited in the first place. Being overweight and inactive is also a big cause.

People who exercise and manage their weight and do not have diabetes in their lineage are likely not to have diabetes even if they consume sugar.

However, if you have diabetes in your lineage and avoid sugar, you still have a chance of having the disease. When it comes to diseases, inheritance is such a big factor, that's why elite athletes still get terminal diseases.

Nobody is exactly sure what causes diabetes jare. That's why there are numerous studies still ongoing on the subject. Some have even said there is a genetic predisposition for the disease.

As for the topic, we need to localise production on some essentials needed for healthcare even if it costs us an arm or a leg figuratively speaking.

This is even the best time to jettison all these orthodox medications and embrace alternative medicine.

There lots of herbs out there that can be much more efficacious than the orthodox drugs.

Consult the right herbalist. Remember, there is power in nature!

How is the nonsense you uttered now related to the high cost of insulin in this thread? If the sudden price increase happened under a different government other than Tinubu's, would you have dropped the same comment?

Bro, no one needs to certify something that works across board. Who certified the chinese herbs like ginseng that made it's way to africa? Or the needle accupunture?

Thing is, Nigeria as a nation hasn't invested enough to certify our local medication as safe for our consumption; certainly, a white man won't certify it on your behalf.
