[quote author=Mille post=132900791]Whoever composed that list needs a big knock on their head. Speaking of Yorubaland, the top hierarchy is; Alaafin of Oyo Ooni of Ife Oba of Benin Alake of Egba Awujale of Ijebu Olubadan, Oba of Lagos are well respected but are not first class Kings in Yorubaland. [Ooni of Ife ranks ahead of Alaafin of Oyo. The Ooni Stool is the throne of the father, while that of Alaafin is of his firstborn son.] |

Historically, there are only 5 first class kings in Nigeria. 1. The Oba of Benin 2. The Sultan of Sokoto 3. The Ooni of Ife 4. The Alafin of Oyo 5. The Emir of Kano. It wasn't until more recently, less than 40 years ago, that the others rulers on this list started getting noticed, especially woth the relationship they had with past military leaders. Past military head of states and state administrators gave a lot of money to these rulers, to be able to get some good grace with their people. Missing on that list is the Obong of Calabar and thr Alake of Egbaland. 3 Likes |

Richtaiwo:I suggest that schools in Nigeria should abolish the positioning of students grades.. What the schools should be doing would be to publish the class average grade, the best grade and the least grade (without exposing the identities of those who scored them) in everybody's report-book.. This will help students to know whether they are above or below average,, and how far away they are from the average towards the highest score or least score., yet they shouldn't have this sense of jealousy amongst the students, rather this will cause personal resolve for growth,, and not a personal resolve to do better than some particular persons. |

nonxo007: Alaafin is Royalty, Ooni is not Ooni's father served Alaafin's family in a priest capacity. 1st Alaafin inherited the land from Oduduwa, the progenitor, of course Ooni a servant didn't inherit Oduduwa by was appointed after grandchildren left to found their own kingdoms. An Alaafin, Sango in particular returned to Ife and sacked Ooni. He reigned as both Alaafin and king of Ife together. During Oyo empire, Alaafin reigned, collected taxes from Ife. That figure Alaafin you see there has never served any authority. A royal from birth to date. "Oyo o seru Baba enikan" The same way Queen colonized countries, imposed taxes, language, English Bible is the same way Alaafin colonized the land from Kogi through Southwest to Benin Republic where he still has kings and kingdoms who visited Adeyemi in his year of death. You should Google the case esugbayi vs Lagos when the White Chief Justice at the time said she needed an authority in Nigeria to decide on the matter. Both parties led the Chief Justice to Alaafin's palace. 1 Like |

The 1st class chiefs of Nigeria were party to signing the 1914 almalgation document. OP, do your research. The Obong of Calabar was probably the #1 traditional ruler in the south at that time, because Calabar was capital of Nigeria. Others were Oba of Benin, the king of Ife, and sultan of Sokoto. 1 Like |

Since 1963 when Nigeria became a republic, Nigeria's monarch system has been abolished. So there is no more monarchy system in Nigeria, those kings, obas we see are just figure heads kept and put under mere local government chairmen and councilors to supress our rights, steal our resources for politicians and used us against ourselves during elections and sell our resources to foreigners while the indigenous people suffers and never benefits from their our God given natural resources, they sell our lands to foreigners, kill the people. They have no real power per say. First class ko 100 class ni. 1 Like |
