Sorting and collection
PET bottles are separated from household waste for separate collection. This step ensures that PET bottles are separated from other non-recyclable materials such as PVC or metal.

Label and cap removal
During the recycling process, labels are removed from the caps (usually made of PP or HDPE) and the bottles. An automated label removal machine can be used to clean the bottles efficiently.

Washing
PET bottles are fed into a washing facility where water and detergents are used to remove surface contaminants such as beverage residues, grease and soil.

Shredding
After cleaning, PET bottles are fed into a plastic shredder to be crushed into smaller sized plastic flakes (often referred to as PET bottle flakes).

Rinsing and separation
PET bottle flakes are fed into a rinsing tank for washing, and are also separated by specific gravity to remove contaminants that have a different density than PET, such as cap residue.

Drying
PET bottle flakes are processed through a centrifugal dewaterer or dryer to ensure they are completely dry and ready for the next step of pelletising or direct processing.

Pelletising or direct use
PET bottle flakes can be heated and melted through a plastics granulator to make recycled PET pellets. The recycled pellets can be used to make new PET bottles, fibres or other plastic products.
