The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese has said President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills will take away the burden on poor Nigerians and small companies when signed into law.

The four executive bills have since introduction pitched the 36 state governors against the Federal Government, with the former calling for the withdrawal of the bills to create room for more consultation.

Though some governors are said to be shifting their position on the matter, Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Zulum, has called on his northern colleagues to reject the bills, insisting that if implemented, they would damage the region’s economy.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Agbese called on Nigerians to rally around Tinubu’s tax bills, adding that as lawmakers, the interest of the nation surpassed individual or sectional consideration.

“We hope to debate these bills on Tuesday and we expect robust deliberation that will ultimately lead to the passage of the bills. Most of our colleagues have read the bills and as a result, they are now shifting grounds. Those initially opposed to the bills are now advocating for their speedy consideration and passage.

“When we converge next week, more supporters will have been won over but I want to add that this is not only about lawmakers. These bills are about Nigerians, from the top company executive to the farmer in a rural village. I say this because public policy affects everyone. If passed into law, these bills will rejig the economy and ensure rapid development of critical infrastructure,” he added.

He commended Tinubu for championing a new direction of tax administration in the country, saying, “Nigeria is going the way of progressive taxation. What this means is that if implemented, we will have a new tax regime that takes away the burden from poor Nigerians and small companies. It is a new thinking that will do us good”.

Those with the gavel that will slam the bill into law are all in support of the bill but some small fry with backward mentality that has always keep the country as a beggarly state, are having sleepless nights, kicking themselves on social media.
The public hearing is only a mere formality as the bill is already a done deal.

Abeg they should hasten up the bill.
How can you be destroying beers and be collecting tax from what you are destroying and not contributing to.

If all the SS legistors don't support this bill, then they'll have themselves to blame

I am not a fan nor advocate of tinubu. As a matter of fact, i hate most of his policies. However, truth be said the school loan is not a scam and the port Harcourt refinery is still a work in progress as they've not perfected the whole thing before announcing it. By February, the port Harcourt refinery will commence full operations in earnest

These people have ulterior motives behind this tax reforms . How do they benefit the poor?

VAT is integrated into the cost or price of a product and the poor pays for it at the point of purchase. So how is is exempted?

That's how they will continue to say, after passing the bill u won't see any positive effect of it on average Nigerians.

My problem with this President is that I don't see him mean well for an average Nigerians, none of his policies has changed things for good.

Just as every other policies initiated by Tinubu, which have negatively impacted the poor citizen, and have completely wiped out the middle class, there are no exemptions in this new tax bill

Are you not aware that the new tax bill proposes an increase in VAT from the current 7.5% to 10% in 2025, and then rises as high as 15% by 2030?

You and I both know that VAT is paid by the final consumer, regardless of their income level.

What bills have you passed to protect the girl child in the society, what bills have you passed to protect the vulnerable?
What’s the essence of passing a bill into law when presidents’ men don’t obey court orders?

I smile when foreigners say Nigerians are intelligent. Well, thank God for the number. Let me explain: 0.1% to 3% of the total population had previously found their way out, and these people have performed admirably. So, the few did a good job representing us. What about the remaining 97 percent? Blocked heads causing wahala in the nation. grin Later, more block heads began to leave, potentially increasing the percentage of Nigerians in diaspora to 10 - 15% of the population....or even higher. Then we started hearing about Nigerian scammers and betrayals. Lol.

If you doubt my claim that there are too many y blocked-heads in Nigeria, read the comments above. After Oloyede explained everything and even demonstrated that anyone earning the minimum wage up to N100,000 (I suppose but not more) will not be taxed. So they can not understand how this is a win for the vast majority of Nigerians in this category. And, interestingly, I believe that more than 90% of the block heads listed above fall into this category.

Being progressive while having blocked heads is frustrating. They are just too difficult to deal with, and they always think they know everything. Let us pretend we did not read their comments by not mentioning them or explaining it again. Allow them to demonstrate their stupidity so that, when the dividends arrive, they will learn not to speak again.

If they practice what they preach o. People that earn below 1m annually will be exempted from paying tax, there will be no VAT on essential commodities to the poor while there will be an increase in VAT on goods that are essential to the rich.
