Google Search Nigeria Is Having Security Issues by promami: 3:07am On Dec 07 |
I've been having issues today trying to search things on Google. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't. Noticed it's an SSL issue. I thought it's a Chrome issue and I tried to access the search engine via Brave browser and it turned out same thing. Anyone else experiencing this or my network is whining me?

Can you see Meta on the footer on the Brave browser screenshot? It appears Facebook powers Google SSL. |

This does indeed look like a network issue, but not in the way you may be thinking! Meta play no part in Googles SSL. In fact, Google are their own CA (certificate authority) and issue and cryptographically sign their own certificates. What you seem to be looking at looks like IP Spoofing, a site inserted maliciously called a man in the middle attack. A man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack is a form of cyberattack in which criminals exploiting weak web-based protocols insert themselves between entities in a communication channel to steal data. None of the parties sending email, texting, or chatting on a video call are aware that an attacker has inserted their presence into the conversation and that the attacker is stealing their data. IP spoofing is similar to DNS spoofing in that the attacker diverts internet traffic headed to a legitimate website to a fraudulent website. Instead of spoofing the website’s DNS record, the attacker modifies the malicious site's IP address to make it appear as if it is the IP address of the legitimate website users intended to visit. Run a dig or nslookup on the domain from your local device and take a look at the IP it is trying to point at. Does it belong to Google? The issue may stem from an insecure WIFI connection or worse, using a public network. |
