I once saw a released video tape of an Afghan suicide bomber urging others to join him just before he blew himself up. The English translation sounded something life this; "Fellow Brethren, you have not much use for your life. You're going to die young anyway, either from Cholera, or some other disease. Why not become a suicide bomber, so you can join god on his right hand in the afterlife." {or something like that, I can't remember the exact words}. I have a feeling that's the same mentality most who engage in such in other parts of the world have as well. It has more to do with poverty than anything else. I think the "brainwashing" effect of religious extremism transcends all forms of reason. It is about programming the mind to believe anything and to act in a certain way. Not even wealth or social status can correct this anomaly. I however agree that those higher up the chain tend to know better and often have a different agenda from just religion.
