Nigeria police is corrupt. Very, very corrupt.

My story.

During the period of the global lockdown in 2020, I was kidnapped and robbed by men of the Nigeria police in central area, Abuja.

It was in May and I had just gone to see a friend who was admitted at the national hospital. When I came out to get a cab home, there was none outside the hospital. I had to walk down to Skylak Pharmacy to see if I could get a taxi going towards national secretariat from where I’d find another to take me to my destination.

On getting to the T-junction where the pharmacy was located, I noticed a police van parked some meters away from the pharmacy with two officers standing behind it wielding their signature dilapidated AK47s.
It was already some minutes past 5pm and the curfew in town at the time was from 8pm to 6am.

As I stood there waiting for a taxi going my way, the two officers walked up to me and asked that I identify myself. I was shocked! I had not committed an offense by standing there, neither had I done anything to warrant their suspicion.

As I tried to remove my wallet from my jacket, one of them grabbed my phone and tossed it to the other. Instantly, I became suspicious of them and started to protest….. alas, it was my greatest undoing that night.

The two officers grabbed and hit me several times-but I fought back, because I knew I was innocent and what they were doing was illegal.

One other officer came down from the van and hit me on my chest with the butt of his gun and that was when I was successfully dragged into the van.

Inside the van, I was asked to unlock my phone. I protested a little, but when one of them told me that if I continued to disobey them, they can either shoot me and dump my body in any bush around tbe city or even take me to their station and accuse me of any henuous crime of their choice, I knew I had no choice but to mellow and do as Instructed…. After all I was alone and they were four, including the driver.

I unlocked my phone, and they also asked that I open my bank app. They checked and asked that I withdraw everything in the account for them. They drove me to central area where I was followed by two of them to an ATM and I withdrew 23,000 naira and gave to them. They also took my wallet and my sneakers; the wallet had about 12k in it.

I was driven to city gate, thrown out of the van and they zoomed off…… it was already very dark, couldn’t tell what time it was.

How I got home is another crazy story entirely.

So, yes, what Kemi Badenoch said about the police in Nigeria is true. very true.

I’ve had a few other terrible experiences with them even after this particular one.

For real, I don’t rate any police officer at all. I curse them under my breath every time I see them.
