Joining the ranks of 22 newly recognized global landmarks, Badagry’s Slave Route, including the haunting Point of No Return, has achieved the prestigious status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition affirms Badagry’s pivotal role in the transatlantic slave trade, drawing global attention to its profound cultural and historical importance. Located in Lagos State, Nigeria, the Badagry Slave Route tells an unflinching story of the millions of Africans forcibly taken from their homeland and sold into slavery. The Point of No Return, a memorable site along the route, serves as a harrowing reminder of the final steps many took before being shipped across the Atlantic. The UNESCO recognition is seen as a pivotal moment for Lagos, showcasing its heritage while positioning it as a premier destination for cultural tourism and historical education. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described this achievement as a milestone in the state’s vision to become Africa’s leading tourism and cultural hub. With this new recognition, Lagos State aims to further develop Badagry as a center for remembrance, healing, and education, ensuring that the lessons of history remain vivid and impactful for generations to come. Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, spoke passionately... You need to visit this place, man. You got shivers running down your spine. If Kemi had visited a place like this, she would have been a little bit measured. -Kiss the truth! 3 Likes 1 Share |

Genuine history is being distorted by those who hate Christianity. The explorers were white men who came for slave trade with the motive to expand British empire The missionaries were white Christians who use the gospel to counter the colonialist hegemony. For whatever the much touted master plan of Lagos State is worth, the sad fact that Badagry is still in 2024 what it was 1999 shows the plan isn't master enough. There seems to be an element of lack of developmental vision and may be a sprinkle of injustice in the drawing of that plan. #Badagrylokan 2 Likes |

Praxis758: In your head, why are the explorers not christians and the missionaries christians? Or do I need to show you the missionaries role in directly selling people as well? Mind you the church was comissioning the explorers Portuguese Catholic missionaries in Africa were often entangled in the institution of slavery, both as owners and participants in the slave trade. In Luanda, Angola, religious orders such as the Jesuits became significant landowners and enslavers. From the city's foundation in 1576, these missionaries utilized enslaved labor to operate large agricultural enterprises, including cattle ranches and plantations. Their involvement extended beyond ownership; they actively participated in the slave trade, contributing to the broader trans-Atlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans. https://aeh.uwpress.org/content/51/1/65?utm_source=chatgpt.com |

CyrusVI: Lagos State is celebrating UNESCO recognition but what about Lagos State itself doing something that will transform Badagry. By the way, I don't care if you scroll past my comments. Since I joined Nairaland, I have always said my mind and I won't change that because Tinubu is president or because you are paid peanut to gaslight people. Below is a screenshot of my opinion of Badagry in 2021 even Tinubu became president. My advice is you should always keep open mind about issues instead of twisting things to suit your agenda. Everything shouldn't be seen from tribal lens. No society will develop doing that. Thank you, bro. 1 Like
