Titi sat at by one of the tables she used for the customers in the beer parlor/pepper soup joint she operated. It was few minutes to eleven p.m. and the last customer had just left. She counted the day’s proceeds. It was only about half of what it was the previous day. Business was like that: sometimes, you would make so much, and sometimes, the earnings would nose-dive. She sighed. 

“Alright, you can go home now,” she told Mary, one of her assistants. 

“Okay, ma. Goodnight,” Mary said and left. 

Uche, Titi’s other assistant, had earlier called that she would not be able to come to work that day. She said she was indisposed.

Titi looked at the money she had just counted and sighed again. She was even lucky. Some of her friends that were doing other kind of business were not faring better. Generally, the economy was down. One of her friends, Mummy Junior, who had hair dressing salon, was complaining about low patronage.

At least, Titi could still make some steady money from the business between early evening and late evening. 

At the age of thirty-five, she owned her own business and was self-employed. She was lucky her business was quite lucrative and she had made some savings over time. If not, it would not have been easy for her as a single mother at this trying time. 

She had gone through a lot to get to this point. Now, her business and her daughter were her life. Those were the things that really mattered. She finished with her counting, used rubber band to tie the money together, tucked it inside her purse and put the lot inside her bag. It was time to close up the place for the day.

She thought of her daughter as she moved to the exit door. Gloria had just turned eighteen. Wow, how time had moved so fast. Eighteen was a significant age, as far as Titi was concerned. The late teenage year was an age young ladies like to experiment with their bodies and do some wild things.

Titi hoped her daughter would not be carried away by sexual desires. It was that age that she, Titi, was swept off her feet. Her innocence combined with naivety and the resultant effect was Gloria. The unwanted baby of that time was now a beautiful young lady.

Now, Titi was beginning to worry about her daughter. She just hoped Gloria would not be swallowed up by sex like she was. It had happened to her twice already and she definitely resolved it would never happen to her again. It nearly ruined her life. But just when things looked so bleak, she was able to overcome. She was able to forge on despite the setbacks. 

She was going to have to have a talk with Gloria about this prospective genetic defect. It would not be good if she let her have the kind of nasty experience that she, Titi, had. She had to warn her to be very careful of its looming addiction.

That she should not fall under its spell. It was a spell-binding thing that was so powerful that it became primordial and made every other thing less significant. At the peak of it, only that special warmth you felt between your legs and the wonderful release called orgasm were the cherished desire. 

Titi had loved sex from the very beginning when she practically learnt about it. From the curiosity she had as a teenager, she had come to love everything about it. As she grew into late teenage, she could not control herself once she started having it. It became like a drug to her; like an opium. It was the stuff she couldn't resist, more and more.

What could have been the only way out was avoiding it. Yes, the only way to avoid its powerful addiction was total abstinence. But that was not easy either.

Being on her own and getting her own business started and ensuring its success had helped her stay sex free and away from its addiction, at least reasonably.

She put all into her business and resisted temptation from lustful men that were never satisfied with their wives. Her line of business was particularly tempting, but Titi had been able to have her way.
