President Bola Tinubu has justified the frequent borrowings under his administration.

Tinubu, who stated this during a presidential media chat on Monday, argued that borrowing is not criminal.

The President was responding to questions about the projected deficit of N13.39tn in the proposed 2025 national budget, which the administration intends to finance through borrowing.

“Borrowing is not criminal. 'We have been coming from mismatch of our needs. We have a serious infrastructural deficit.

“If you took huge money and match it on the long term project, matching project on the long term basis, where we do have the short term to manage the long term basis is a mismatch.

“Yes, we have headed the wrong road in the past. I don’t want to look at that. I want to think about prosperity for our country.

“What’s the element of these borrowing? Capital projects – our roads are terrible, our internet is not at the level a nation would want it to be, we are still indebted in electricity and efficiency in power generation. We have to take it with our two hands,” he said.

DAILY POST reported that Tinubu’s government on Wednesday presented a national budget of N47.96 trillion for 2025 to the joint session of the National Assembly.

The budget prioritises defence, infrastructure, and human capital development, with a projected deficit of N13.39tn to be financed through borrowing

Before now, some Nigerians had frowned at level of loans being sought by the current administration.

For instance, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar last month said that Nigeria is sinking further into debt while the National Assembly has become an accomplice.

He frowned at the intention of Tinubu’s administration to borrow an additional N1.7 trillion, being shortfall in the 2024 budget, through Euro bonds.

Atiku said that loans under the current government are bone-crushing to Nigerians and bringing insufferable pressure on the economy.

The headline is childish. The headline is chosen with the intention to sensationalize this post. The headline is childish because borrowing is indeed not criminal. Instead of telling us what we don't know, you are constituting nuisance by repeating what we already know. We already know that borrowing is not criminal. What we don't know is how the borrowed money has been spent.

I don't like this regime. I don't like the personality of Tinubu. But when I want to criticise Tinubu or this regime, I do it logically, not childishly.

Neither the headline nor any part of the post explains what has been achieved with the borrowed money. No part of the post calls for constitutional amendment so that too much borrowing will become criminal. The media is just interested in making noise and making money. How does this post help the public? Nuisance!

If the media really cares about the masses, the media should challenge the management of the borrowed money and use this Tinubu's statement as an excuse to advocate for constitutional amendments so that too much borrowing will be criminalised. But the media, instead of doing so, is only good at constituting nuisance.

Borrowing to loot is criminal. And that's what he's been doing since may last year.

We're yet to see what he's been using the billions of dollars he keeps borrowing for.

As long as the borrowed money is not stolen, then it is not a crime.

It is never criminal. It is just like children visiting neighbours. It's the various forms of abuse that comes from it that makes Nigerians averse to it. They are ALWAYS unavoidably looted. The projects they finance are ALWAYS unbelievably bloated.

Meanwhile, I shared a testimony of a former employee who suffered the same fate like Dele Farotimi vs Afe Babalola Chambers and it was deleted from my created posts: https://www.nairaland.com/8299686/dele-farotimi-not-first-victim . In this age of smartphones and browsing history, I can't possibly be expected not to track it down.

Not sure who did that but the least you could do was give the reason. I don't believe Nairaland suppresses information (which this looks like), but if Nairaland is avoiding legal hotwater, we could be informed and avoid it all the same.
