According to The Guardian, The Emir of Kano, Dr. Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, has called on Western nations to prioritize the development of Northern Nigeria by investing in vital infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and industries, rather than focusing on religious matters.

He made this appeal while delivering a keynote address at the 50th anniversary of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass’s visit to Jos, which occurred during General Yakubu Gowon’s tenure as Head of State. Nyass, who was the President of Senegal at the time, visited Nigeria to foster peace and religious unity.

The event, organized by the Plateau State Da’ Iratu Ahlus Sa’adah, aimed to promote peace and religious harmony across Nigeria.

Sanusi’s address emphasized the need for practical support in key sectors, particularly in the northern part of the country, where infrastructure development remains a significant challenge.

Sanusi urged, “If you go to Rome, Saudi Arabia or Iran, don’t go there to bring religion. We already have religion. Let them come and invest in agriculture. If you really love the North, come and give us information technology, build hospitals and build schools. Don’t preach hatred. Don’t preach enmity. We do not want it.”

His comments underscored the need for Western countries to move beyond religious proselytism and contribute to the region’s socio-economic development.

Further emphasizing religious tolerance, Sanusi highlighted that both Islam and Christianity have coexisted in the region for centuries and that the people are well-versed in their faiths.

“We have been Muslims and Christians for hundreds of years. We do not need anybody to come and tell us how to be Muslims and Christians,” he said.

Sanusi also shared personal experiences, recalling his strong friendships with both Muslims and Christians, which helped shape his character.

He mentioned his close relationship with Yusuf Pam, a Christian and former classmate, saying, “My character was formed by CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria). Yusuf Pam, here, is my good friend and classmate. We went to school together and we went to ABU Zaria together and Lagos together successfully.”

Sanusi also recounted an act of kindness from Christians during a difficult time in his life, noting that it was Christians who arranged a plane for him to leave Kano when he was asked to depart in 2020.

“Why should I not like Christians and Christianity?” he asked, stressing the importance of mutual respect and understanding.

He concluded by condemning the preaching of hatred, asserting, “Christianity and Islam don’t preach hatred. So, anybody who preaches hatred should be arrested and prosecuted, whether Muslim or Christian.

While your rich children like Dangote and Rabiu are buying up Lagos with billions of dollars?
