Kidnappers Kill Vigilante Member, Abduct Colleague In Lagos by MasterJayJay: 10:02am On Jan 14

A member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Kayode Goriola, has been killed by suspected kidnappers in Igbe community in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred at past midnight on Saturday.

It was gathered that the assailants stormed the area after entering through the swampy part of the community.

They however encountered Goriola and his colleague who attempted to foil the kidnap attempt.

A resident, Tunji Alao, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday said the kidnappers shot Goriola in the process and then whisked his colleague away.

He said, “Goriola and one of his colleagues were going about their duty when the kidnappers arrived through a swampy area in the community. The two of them attempted to restrict the kidnappers but they were overpowered. The kidnappers thereafter attempted to take them away but Goriola refused and that made them shoot him in the head and the other person was taken away.”

A resident who identified himself simply as Okla said it was the fourth time such an incident would happen in the community.

According to him, a couple was kidnapped in the previous attack while a security operative was killed and one other injured in the process.

He said, “The community is prone to kidnappings. And this is the fourth time kidnappers have attacked us. A man and a woman believed to be a couple was abducted from their vehicle last year and the kidnappers left their baby inside. A ransom was paid before they were released. A similar incident also resulted in the death of a member of the vigilante group, while their leader was shot in the arm and hospitalised for two months at the Ikorodu General Hospital.”

When contacted, the head of the vigilante group in the community, Lawal Abdullahi, confirmed the incident. He however claimed to be busy with the burial plans of the deceased.

“We have reported at the station about retrieving his corpse from the mortuary. You can hear people’s voices in the background. We can talk later in the night,” he said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached as calls made to his telephone were not responded to. A text message sent to him had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed.

Those creek based kidnappers seems to be enjoying immunity.
They enter, kidnap and leave without resistance most of the time.

Kidnapping is the best 'business' now because the government and security agencies are inept.

This is probably the easiest crime to solve because the ransom is the bait and communication can be tracked.

Vigilantes should be equipped with pump action rifles or AK 47.

Police are stationed there during the day but they tax Koropes and Okadas.
It means the kidnappers stormed at night.
The road is in very bad condition which ought to assist with escape. It was ABANDONED by Hitech building the Coastal Highway.

It's so sad that humans are treating themselves as animals these days.

Before humans trap animals and either kill them for food or sale.

Now we trapping ourselves for sale!

This is not genuine. They kidnapped a friend mother in-law not the shot vigilant colleague. Now I understand many news we read could be incomplete or misinformations.

I advocate the return of the death penalty to drastically reduce the incidence of these crimes.

Here are some security tips to help minimize the risk of kidnapping in Lagos:

Before You Leave Your Home
1. Be aware of your surroundings: Know what's happening in your neighborhood and surrounding areas.
2. Vary your routine: Avoid following a predictable daily routine that can make it easier for kidnappers to track you.
3. Keep a low profile: Avoid displaying signs of wealth (e.g., expensive jewelry, watches, or cars).

While Moving Around
1. Use reputable transportation: Opt for licensed taxis or ride-hailing services, and always check the driver's ID before getting in.
2. Avoid traveling alone at night: Try to travel with a group or use a trusted driver.
3. Keep your phone charged and accessible: Make sure your phone is fully charged and easily accessible in case of an emergency.
4. *Avoid displaying valuables: Keep your valuables (e.g., laptops, phones, wallets) out of sight.
5. Be cautious of strangers: Be wary of strangers who approach you, especially if they're asking for personal information or trying to distract you.

Additional Tips
1. Stay informed: Stay up-to-date with local news and events that may affect your safety.
2. Know your emergency contacts: Make sure you have the phone numbers of your emergency contacts, including the police and your embassy (if you're a foreign national).
3. Trust your instincts: If you feel uncomfortable or sense something is off, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation.
4. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash: Try to use alternative payment methods, such as credit cards or mobile payments.
5. Keep your vehicle secure: Always lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of sight.

Kidnapping Prevention Measures
1. Be cautious of suspicious calls or messages: Be wary of calls or messages from unknown numbers, especially if they're asking for personal information or trying to lure you into a meeting.
2. Verify identities: Verify the identities of people who approach you or contact you, especially if they claim to be from a government agency or a reputable organization.
3. Avoid traveling to high-risk areas: Avoid traveling to areas with high crime rates or where kidnappings are common.

What to Do If You're Kidnapped
1. Stay calm: Try to remain calm and think clearly.
2. Gather information: Try to gather as much information as possible about your captors and your surroundings.
3. Look for opportunities to escape: Look for opportunities to escape, but only if it's safe to do so.
4. Follow instructions: Follow your captors' instructions, but only if they don't put you in harm's way.

Remember, prevention is key. By being aware of your surroundings and taking necessary precautions, you can minimize the risk of kidnapping.

Howbdo we nip kidnapping in the bud? Beyond making laws, the federal government needs improve security. In addition, they should stop assigning police and dss to politicians as it is obvious we do not have enough of them to protect the citizens.
