DR Congo's Government has carried out the mass executions of 102 gang members, with 70 more scheduled to be executed.

The Kuluna gang is a notorious street gang in Kinshasa known for terrorizing residents.

Under the initiative codenamed "Operation Zero Kuluna," the government has pledged to get rid of street gangs in Kinshasa entirely

Congo executes 102 'urban bandits' with 70 more set to be killed, officials say
102 men were executed by the Congolese government in the past week, and 70 are set to be executed today, according to the Congolese Minister of Justice

KINSHASA, Congo -- Some 102 men were executed by the Congolese government in the past week, and 70 more are set to be executed, the country's minister of justice said Sunday in a statement to the Associated Press.

It said the men, aged 18 to 35, were armed robbers and “urban bandits,” locally known as Kulunas, who were executed in northwest Congo at Angenga prison. Forty-five were killed in late December, and the remaining 57 were executed within the last 48 hours.

A flight of 70 more people from Kinshasa has arrived at Angenga, but the government hasn't commented on the status of the prisoners. Minister of Justice Mutamba, who is overseeing the executions, said late Sunday the “third batch will be executed, so the first two have already undergone the measure of execution by the death penalty.”

The government’s decision to apply the death penalty has proved divisive. Some have welcomed the measure as a means of restoring order and security in the cities, while others are concerned about the risks of abuse and human rights violations.

“We welcome this decision by the minister because it will help put an end to urban crime. From 8 p.m. onwards, you can’t move around freely because you’re afraid of running into a Kuluna,” said Fiston Kakule, a resident of the eastern city of Goma.

Espoir Muhinuka, a human rights activist, warned of the possibility of extrajudicial executions and called for a strict respect for judicial procedures and fundamental guarantees. He fears that political pressure could lead to unjust convictions and arbitrary executions.

“The situation in the DRC is complex and requires a multidimensional approach. The fight against urban gangs must go hand in hand with efforts to combat poverty, unemployment and social exclusion, which are often contributing factors to crime,” he said.

The death penalty in Congo is a sensitive issue. The country abolished it in 1981, but it was reinstated in 2006. The last execution took place in 2003 but in March 2024, the Congolese government announced the resumption of capital executions, however, the reinstated death penalty was intended to apply to military personnel accused of treason.

In May, eight soldiers were sentenced to death for fleeing the battlefield, and in July, 25 soldiers were convicted of similar offences. None of them is known to have been executed.

But here in Zoo, they would bath them with warm water, Cook good food for them, Carry them to Palace to meet President/Governor, give them Pocket Money and ask them to go back to the society in peace.

Why won't be surge in criminals activities!

Someone who killed people, raped women, destroy farms and properties. Kidnap women, children. Made homeless multitude, made uncountable orphans. These are the people that our governors turn around to give hand shake and gifts. One of the advocate of this nonsense is this Sheik Gummi.

Way to go. That's how these area boys and agberoes should be treated.
They go around in their numbers harassing everybody everyday.
They harass and rob transport operators and destroy, vandalise their vehicles, harass even private vehicles..now they are also harassing these poor delivery guys! Imagine a delivery guy harassed at mile2,he gets to ijesha, they will still stop him to obtain him. He gets to cele,Isolo,Oshodi same harassment!

I was at Lawanson the other day and saw these area boys harassing a bicycle rider!!!! They even seized his bike!!! Horrible people should be given this treatment.

Shameless men who chose not to hustle but wanna rob those who have chosen to work.

It is good when a country has the will to enforce the law in its books.
Now every kuluna or potential kuluna will know that their next operation
might be their last.

Despite what modern activists claim, harsh punishment is highly effective in curbing
crimes and destroying gangs.

Nairaland is no longer up to date as it's used to before,...and that's by the way.

My take is...why is it that they can't be sentenced to life imprisonment with may be hard labour, other than the straight death sentence

It is a national disgrace and an abberration.
Terrible decisions as if those that are doing it are cursed.
We have lost things other nations envied except good leaders. How can governors be negotiating with bandits?
How can govt be recruiting bandits in name of repentance to their armed forces and not have a rethink these moføs are pretending because of hunger and tactically evading punishment initially meant for them? Are ya armed forces lacking interested goodwill cadets? Why mixing them with janjaweèds that are corrupting them and making their own patriotism a joke?
What about millions of sane citizens, hardworking and patriotic citizens that were denied posts in the army?
Many have good heart, are able bodies, intelligent and would have been an asset to Nigeria and not a liability bándit/terrorist that has been impregnating girls from 14 years and has begotten excess uncared for children to almajirilism and future bandit recruits. They just give birth like pîgléts without taking care of them. Their govs don't tell their clerics to preach against breeding bastards because they believed their region is swollen with population for next election.
Ya Allah, guide ya people from further raising janjaweèds. Richmem are still struggling to raise plenty children not more of poor bandits that depend on looting to survive and can be meat of military anytime. What a country. No wonder Badenoch was raking few months ago. To an extent isn't she justified?

That’s the way to do it

Apart from the President, even the governors are part of the problem.
The prisons are getting filled up with condemned killers and yet those uselsss governors won’t sign their death warrant.
According to them and their folly and hypocrisy, they don’t want to have blood in their hands. But same criminals will jail break and come out again to kill innocent people. And yet they use same hands to sign corruption money that keep people poor and die from bad health care, poor road conditions, poverty and ignorance

Good. That's the way to go. Not like in one country like that where they will be pardoned and paid huge monies. Then allowed back to the society. While their honest victims and their relatives are suffering for the crimes the bandits committed
