The Nigerian Army on Sunday confirmed its top military commander Lt. Col. T.E. Alari was killed when ISWAP terrorists launched a desperate Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attack on troops at Gardiri Base in Damboa Local Government Area.

Alari until his death on January 24 was Commanding Officer of the 149 Battalion.

Though the VBIED was intercepted and destroyed by the troops, the shrapnel from the explosion tragically took the lives of those closest to the blast, including Alari, who, as always, was at the front

The attack killed at least 8 people and injured 20 others, with 2 in critical condition.

Despite the attack, the troops neutralized more than 60 terrorists and recovered 14 AK-47 rifles, six RPG tubes, 18 motorcycles, and 24 AK-47 magazines during the one-week-long operation.

grin Lizardbbqgrills and his fellow zombies need to see what the useless government they have been supporting are turning soldiers into. I'm certain they will withhold their benefits despite giving their lives for a failed nation, spits.

Wow....!! RIP

I thought they claimed Tinubu has eliminated the terrorists? In his "arrangee" press chat he said anyone could travel anywhere safely in Nigeria...that was the lie they told him and he did not bother to check or validate first....how come they are kpaing the commanders not even the harmless civilians o?

Why will the Army keep lieing till they cannot lie again?
For days they keep denying this bloody attack and lost of our soldier's.
They threw the internet off the balance, that people do not know which of the story to believe again.
Whereas the families of the affected officer's have already cried out and these clueless NIGERIA Army kept denying the attack.
They should apologize to NIGERIANS.
Rest in Peace to the Officer's.

Another one bites the dust...

They will say it's the ultimate sacrifice but is it really? Death that is avoidable by politicians lack of will to do the right thing promptly cannot be heroes sacrifice.

They will build more barracks and name them after politicians instead of officers like this one that has kissed the dust.

Evil country

This tone is a regular paragraph in Nigeria security unit publications but it also sounds defeatist.

Is this different from malam fatori attack

Seun , this news is misleading. They were killed right inside the military base at malam fatori

May his soul rest in peace. But please help me make sense of this statement from the army.

"Though the VBIED was intercepted and destroyed by the troops, the shrapnel from the explosion tragically took the lives of those closest to the blast, including Alari, who, as always, was at the front."

A VBIED was INTERCEPTED and DESTROYED but shrapnel took out the CO. Did they intercept the explosive with bare hands? An intercept by the very nature of the word means that something was prevented from achieving its aim. Which clearly wasn't the case here!

I get that the army needs colorful stories of valor like these from time to time but this is too on the nose.

We appreciate the sacrifice these men make and keep making for this nation.
