A man who recently came back to Pakistan with his family confessed to killing his daughter because he disapproved of her TikTok content. According to Pakistani news outlet Geo News, a man named Anwar ul-Haq shot dead her daughter on a street in Balochistan’s Quetta on Tuesday.

During his interrogation, the man initially said that it was an unidentified gunman who shot and killed his US-born daughter. However, he eventually confessed to his wrongdoings. “Our investigation so far has found that the family had an objection to her dressing, lifestyle, and social gathering,” a police investigator named Zohaib Mohsin told local reporters. “We have her phone. It is locked. We are probing all aspects, including honour killing,” he added.

As per the report, the family recently returned to the Balochistan province after living in the United States for about 25 years. The authorities noted that the suspect has US citizenship. According to Geo News, Haq had told authorities that his daughter began creating “objectionable” content on the social media platform TikTok when she lived in the United States.


Uncle arrested in the case
Haq went on to claim that his daughter continued sharing “obscene” videos on the platform after the family came back to Pakistan. Police also noted that they have arrested the 15-year-old’s uncle in connection to his killing. Haq was charged with murder and the matter is currently under investigation.

Meanwhile, the family has declined to comment on the tragic incident. It is pertinent to note that more than 54 million people in Pakistan use TikTok. In the span of a few years, the Pakistani government has often blocked the app in the country, calling for content moderation.

Pakistan’s conservative society is known for taking issue with what it terms “obscene content” on social media platforms. Lately, some of the platforms have been seen complying with requests from the Pakistani authorities in regards to removing certain content.

As of now, over 1,000 women are killed each year in Pakistan at the hands of community or family members. Many of them have been often accused of damaging the “honour” of the family. Some of the reasons, why women were killed in Pakistan are eloping, posting social media content, fraternising with men, or any other infraction against conservative values relating to women.
