Attempts To Set Church Ablaze In Bayelsa By Man Dressed In Turban by 13volts(m): 9:50am On Dec 29, 2011
A middle aged man (names withheld) from Edo State,
disguised in kaftan and turban, has been arrested while
attempting to set ablaze a Church in Yenagoa the Bayelsa
State capital, Daily Trust gathered yesterday.
Our correspondent gathered that the young man, who hails
from Edo State was dressed in kaftans and wore a Turban
attempted to set ablaze the Redeemed Christian Church
along Nicheon Road Yenagoa.
A senior official of the State Security Service (SSS) in
Yenagoa confirmed the attempt to attack the Church but
said the suspect has nothing to do with the radical Boko
Haram sect as he was a Christian from Edo State.
“There is nothing like bombing of a Church in Bayelsa State.
What actually happened was that a man was arrested while
attempting to burn down a Church. The man is said to have
confessed to the Church of being an armed robber and the
Church promised to rehabilitate him and paid his house rent
for two years.
“When his rent expired, he (the man) when back to the
Church demanding for additional House rent and the Church
said they only promised to pay his rent for two years for him
to find a job and be on his own.
“So the man decided to go back to the Church, attempted to
burn down the Church yesterday (Tuesday evening) and was
arrested. We have handed him over to the police. If you
want any other information, you can contact the Police,” the
official said.
The Bayelsa State police command when contacted, denied
knowledge of the incident saying it did not receive any
report or suspect in connection with attempt to burn down a
Church.
“I have been on duty throughout the Christmas period.
Nothing like that happened. Other reporters have called and
I told them the same. I am not aware of any report of a
suspect handed over to us,” the State Police Spokesman,
Eguaveon Emokpae said.

BUT THEN ON A SECOND THOUGHT I totally disagree with d excuses given by the d church.
The attempted burning may hv nothing to do with paying
of rent & securing job for d man as claimed.
Why was he dressed in kaftan n wearing turban? Was dis
man not trying to implicate d so called Boko Haram?
The question is why would security agents connived wt d
men of god to hide d the truth to our detriment?
Am very sure had the attacked been successful the 1st
and only accused would be BH. This is more reason why
some people say there more to dis attacks than meet d
eye.
The real fact is that others are perpetrating heinous crime
against humanity in d name of Boko Haram and d painful
part is dat security agencies are also hiding d truth.
We are helping ourselves and dis may hunt us.

Never knew that Boko Haram burn churches with low human casualty availability . . . instead of bombing packed churches to incur heavy casualties . . .You need more than this to deflect attention from the perverted and wayward muslims killing hundred of innocent souls with gleeful abandon . . .

Na today dem start am?
If Boko Haram that was supposed to be bombing all over the place was presumably pursuing an agenda of Islamic militancy, why would such an agenda be of concern to or be promoted by the three Christian ladies who were now reportedly being detained for the massive bomb blast that ripped apart the mammy market in the army barracks in Bauchi on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 in which 13 people lost their lives?

And had Ms. Lydia Joseph, the Christian lady who set St. John's Cathedral Church along 'Yandoka Road in Bauchi on fire on Saturday, August 27, 2011 escaped unnoticed, her dastardly act would have been written down as the handiwork of Boko Haram.

Even the person who attempted to bomb the police headquarters in Maiduguri and was shot dead certainly didn't fit the average Boko Haram adherent profile: what with Tommy Hilfiger boxers, doubly-folded pencil-denims and Yankee T-shirt, as against the expected stereotypical dan Itori tiri-kwata trousers, simple jampa and a cap and a rosary to match.

All this is not to absolve Boko Haram of responsibility which it has itself claimed; and this, of course, is not to accuse Christians as a body of being responsible for what Boko Haram is doing--or what is being done in its name; but to state a matter of fact and show that those behind it have nothing to do with Islam or anything perhaps even with the original Boko Haram that is supposed to have been planning it as such.

13volts i think u should learn to think a little longer before posting crap. Why would a christian be part of boko haram when the number one goal of the group is to islamise nigeria? He pretended to be a muslim. Is the story that difficult to comprehend?

Timipreye Silva promised to use Boko Haram to deal with the president. Could this be one of his plots? I think a deep investigation should be carried than this hurry-hurry cover cover atitutde our security operatives are employing.

Don't expect many responses to this thread. Truth bites, Alhamdulillah!

Nigerian Christians - some, especially aboard Nairaland - hypocritically write as they cannot, and have never, kill(ed) a fly. The truth is in total dichotomy to this claim. This isn't the first a Christian doing what in the end the blamed will be heaped at Muslims. For a reminder: Christians were caught and paraded in connection to the recent US Embassy thread messages; a Christian woman was apprehended in Bauchi trying to set a church ablaze; etc.

May God uncover whoever is trying to create chaos in Nigeria, whether Muslim or Christian (and anybody of whatever 'faith'), amin.

I think the governor is making real his threat.

Barring any last minute changes, Governor Timipre Sylva’s hope of retaining his seat in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Bayelsa state, may have been foreclosed. Competent sources have revealed that Governor Timipre Sylva, who is the chief Security officer of the state, has become a liability and security risk to the Nigerian security agencies and cannot be trusted with the responsibility of governance. His actions and utterances, penultimate week, caused panic within the presidency and Nigerian
security apparatchiks. President Jonathan was said to be highly disturbed by Governor Sylva`s conduct that he hurriedly summoned a meeting of security chiefs in Nigeria, with Governor Sylva in attendance, to defend himself.

At the meeting Governor Sylva took responsibility for his utterances and conducts, citing
frustration on his part and lack of support from President Jonathan as being responsible for his misdeeds. Subsequently, Governor Sylva knelt down and begged the President and the security czars present to forgive him. He was then asked to cease and desist from making threats capable of heating up the polity and return to Yenogoa immediately. However, security has been beefed up around President Jonathan, his family and interests in Nigeria, particularly in his home state, Bayelsa. To this end “Famou Tamgbei”, a security team, consisting mainly of mobile policemen which was constituted by Governor Sylva and is alleged to be loyal to him, has been disbanded by the Inspector General of police, Hafiz Rigim. Irked by Governor Sylva’s conducts, leading members of the People Democratic Party (PDP) of Ijaw extraction has begun shopping for his replacement. It is however uncertain if they have the backing of President Jonathan.

Huhuonline.com understands that Governor Sylva in a telephone conversation with President Jonathan`s brother and former Bayelsa state commissioner for Health, Dr. Eruani Azipanu, had threatened to kill him, President Jonathan and his wife, Patience, if he was not re-elected as Governor. In a telephone conversation with Huhuonline.com, Eruani said:
“Governor Sylva called me one early morning, and I answered and said Good morning Your Excellency. Sylva responded, Please don’t call me that, I heard the President wants to remove me as Governor and install you, so that is why you refused to return as commissioner? “Let me tell you something. THIS WILL BE THE LAST FIGHT; I WILL KILL PRESIDENT JONATHAN, HIS WIFE, PATIENCE AND YOU. YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THERE IS BOKO HARAM. I WILL MOBILIZE THEM TO YENAGOA AND WILL SINK THE STATE IF YOU PEOPLE MAKE ANY ATTEMPT TO REMOVE ME”.

Our investigation reveals that for several months, Sylva had complained to the Inspector General of Police, Haffiz Rigim that he does not have access to President Jonathan. He said as the Governor of Mr. President’s home state, he was supposed to have unfettered access to the President. However the president’s inner caucus decided to move against him because of his role during the health crisis of former President Umar Yar’Adua that created power vacuum. According to security reports,it was alleged that Governor Sylva provided Five hundred million naira (N500, 000,000.00) as bribe to the National Assembly to make sure that Goodluck Jonathan does not emerge as acting President.

Attempt to reach Governor Sylva was unsuccessful, calls to his phone were not answered, neither did he respond to our text messages as at press time. However, sources close to the Governor insist that his threats was a political ploy, aimed at putting the President`s men, who are opposed to his re-election on the defensive. Asked about Governor Sylva’s threats vis-a-vis, his right to freedom of expression, a leading constitutional lawyer from Nigeria, who craved anonymity, said, “Governor Sylva crossed the line, the Nigerian constitution, (Chapter 4, section 33), guarantee every citizen the right to life, and states no one should be deprived intentionally of his life. It is wrong for anyone to threaten another life, talk less an elected Governor to threaten to terminate the life of a sitting President”.

This is political suicide, and unless President Jonathan let this slide, Gov. Sylva may have ended his political carrier, he said. In a related development there are indications that the removal of the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa, Chief Dairus Obiene, would have negative effects on the struggle by the incumbent governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, to secure the party’s governorship ticket. Investigation  revealed that the governor, who lobbied spiritedly for Obiene to retain his job as part of the grand plan to win the PDP primary slated for November 19, 2011 became worried as
the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) approved the appointment of James Dugo as the substantive chairman ahead of the February 2012 governorship poll.

The tenure of the former state chairman was characterised by bickering and series of complaintsby PDP major stakeholders and members, regarding lopsidedness in the party’s hierarchy. President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Sylva and Obiene are from Bayelsa East Senatorial District, a development which generated ill feelings within the party members in Bayelsa. Also learnt that the  decision of the NWC to ratify the appointment of Mr James Dugo, on Tuesday, in Abuja had terribly rattled the camp of the governor’s loyalists against the forthcoming primary election.

The source further hinted that Sylva had approached elder statesmen from the Niger Delta region and Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom, Edmund Daukoru, the leadership of Ijaw National Congress (INC), Bayelsa Founding Fathers Forum, Bayelsa Elders Forum and paramount ruler of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Otuoke community, HRH Lot Ogiasa, to prevail on the president to give hima chance.

If the the guy is simply angry or frustrated and wanted to get back at the church why must he wear  a kaftan and turban while trying to set the  church ablaze. Assuming he succeeded and was not caught, the act would have automatically been blamed on BH.  Witnesses may have remembered seeing a muslim in turban around the church's premises just before the explosion.

@rhino,
Please don't get yourself worked up trying to explain anything, fact is, due to all the exaggerated media reports about Boko Haram that is broadcasted almost daily,Nairalanders don't like hearing the kind of truth that favours Muslims.
Even after reading this part of your article, some people will still come here and type with their ridiculously bolded fonts that Boko Haram is a ploy to Islamise Nigeria.
