Akufo-Addo Urges Nigeria’s Elite to Champion West African Leadership and Economic Integration

Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo has called on Nigeria’s political and economic elites to take a more assertive leadership role in West Africa and support efforts toward continental unity and intra-African trade.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the launch of A Journey in Service, the autobiography of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, Akufo-Addo emphasized Nigeria’s crucial role in driving regional and continental progress.

Nigeria’s Leadership Role in Africa

Acknowledging Nigeria’s ongoing challenges, the former Ghanaian leader stressed that Africa’s economic and political integration cannot succeed without Nigeria’s firm leadership.

“I cannot forgo the chance of this prestigious platform to mount an important hobby horse of mine.
I appeal once again to Nigeria’s political and economic elite to aggressively assume leadership of West Africa and Africa’s efforts toward unity and e-commerce.”

Akufo-Addo urged Nigeria to embrace its historic responsibility in fostering an integrated, democratic, and economically vibrant Africa, noting that while the country faces significant challenges, history does not wait.

[Ab]“For our prospects of effective integration to materialize, Nigeria must take the lead. This evolution cannot succeed without you, but you will be its greatest beneficiary,” he added.[/b]

Strategic Solutions and Regional Stability

Highlighting the need for well-defined strategies to address regional and global challenges, Akufo-Addo underscored that Africa’s collective success depends on cooperation and decisive leadership.

Reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to regional stability and development, he pledged his country’s continued partnership with Nigeria in repositioning West Africa and the broader continent for sustainable growth.

“Ghana will always remain a loyal ally and a committed partner in this collective journey of advancing and repositioning our region and continent,” he assured.

A Shared Vision for Africa

Akufo-Addo’s address reinforced the urgency of unity and economic collaboration across Africa, placing Nigeria at the centre of regional transformation. His call to action challenges Nigeria’s leadership to embrace its strategic role in shaping the future of the continent.

Smh. The money in Nigeria is so huge that it may take 100 of Ghana to make such money. He is a Professor and immediate past President of Ghana so he's aware of how powerful the Nigerian political and economic elites are. We have the courage too like how we took on the South African White Supremacists to support ANC leaders; mobilize, fund, educate and feed them in Lagos for years till apartheid was defeated.

The UK-trained Engineer founder of Econet confessed that it was when his business got to Nigeria that he made the money he never even knew existed in the whole of Africa!
Ignore Nigeria at your own peril. Did you see how Kenya delivered the ipob terrorist group leader to Nigeria wink

Nigeria will never bless those who speak ill of the land. Have you noticed that it's same set of people who have been complaining of not being blessed by Nigeria from generation to generation?

Nana addo was former president of Ghana...

He is a lawyer and one time attorney General of Ghana I think. But he isn't a professor.

We have the courage alright and the brains as well but everything particularly leadership as in this scenario is not all about money.

I think we put money first as Nigerians reason why our values are constantly depleting by the day.

The abubakar tafawa balewas, amadu bells and founding fathers in general had the world stage at their time and were respected. But it wasn't necessarily about the money.

True money is important but leadership is more than that.

The kenyattas, kigames and even the military guy from Burkina are all respected today not necessarily because of the money but what capacity they bring to the table!

He is addressed as Professor in the media. It will be interesting to know why this has not been raised. He was once married to the Fani-Kayode family of Ile-Ife. He had 2 daughters from that marriage.

Since you are struggling to comprehend my point and how some unpatriotic Nigerians with low self esteem have been denying themselves of being blessed by Nigeria so you wanted to make it about money, I will plead with you to first go make the kind of money some Nigerians have made. You will realize that to build formidable sustainable wealth requires character. Many of you don't even understand how extremely diligent and hardworking some Nigerians are because you keep company with those who have failed and blame others for their failure.

Those folks that you praised have not even achieved a fraction of impact some Nigerians have made in governance. The Kegame you mentioned in ignorance is a clear example. President Kegame is on his 4th or 5th term as president yet he has not built Rwanda up to how Asiwaju Tinubu transformed Lagos. As at 1999, Rwanda was ahead of Lagos in economic and population power yet today Lagos has caught up and far overtaken and exceeded the whole of Rwanda yet Lagos had a smaller land mass and was behind before. It's part of your ignorance and lack of patriotism that made you not to recognize the feat of the likes of Asiwaju Tinubu yet praised a Kegame, Kenyatta with mediocre performance in governance. Even the banks owned by the Kenyattas is today owned by Access Bank because the bank failed. The record of Kegame will be opened one day too. He can not live for ever as a President even if he keeps changing Rwanda law regularly to stay in power for ever.

My point again is that you have been spending time with the losers by choice in Nigeria. Your mindset is equally inferior to the reality of how some Nigerians have achieved far greater impact yet not loud. Go and read about MainOne for example.

This an elite from Ghana airing his opinion, some Nigerians who have never been in a position of power will start condemning Nigeria and its Elites, they might even start condemning the Ghana elite himself.

Social class theory is real
I really don’t want to have anything to do with the lower class.

Shouldn't other country take up the mantle if Nigeria is failing to live up? Instead of wasting their time on Nigeria. Second son can feed the family when the first is incapable

You know, these African leaders and citizens really believed in Nigeria and its government..

To the point that, none of them (especially west Africa) would have argued or dare challenge us, just like the way the US is to the North, south America and Europe. But sadly, that's not the case...

Lol, it is surprising that Akufo-Addo, who is often criticized as the worst president in Ghana's history for failing to sign the anti-LGBTQ law despite having the power to do so, is now calling for Nigeria's elites to take the lead in West Africa. When Nigeria took the lead in enacting anti-LGBTQ law in the region, did he follow suit?
