FCCPC Summons Multichoice Over DStv, GOtv Price Hike by Great100000: 9:33am On Feb 26
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to explain its planned subscription price increase, set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

In a statement on Tuesday, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, said the regulator had ordered MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer to appear at its headquarters on February 27 for an investigative hearing.

The summons comes after the pay-TV announced on Monday a 21 per cent increase in the subscription fee for its DStv Compact package, raising the price from N15,700 to N19,000 among other adjustments in price.

The announcement triggered widespread criticism from subscribers, many of whom took to social media to express frustration over frequent price hikes.

The consumer watchdog, in its statement, expressed concerns over the recurring unilateral price increases, warning that such actions raise serious questions about fairness, market abuse, and potential anti-competitive practices.

“Exercising its mandate under Sections 32 and 33 of the FCCPA, the FCCPC directed the Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria to attend an investigative hearing at the commission’s headquarters on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

“This action follows MultiChoice’s formal notification of the price adjustment, which raises concerns about recurrent unilateral price hikes, potential market dominance abuse, and perceived anti-competitive practices in the pay-TV industry.

“The FCCPC is deeply concerned that Nigerian consumers continue to face frequent price increases, amid accusations that MultiChoice applies different pricing strategies in other markets, heightening questions about fairness and market abuse”, the statement partly read.

The regulator warned that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation or any violation of fair market principles could result in penalties, sanctions, or other corrective measures.

The FCCPC also confirmed that it is engaging the sector regulator and other relevant agencies to ensure fair competition and stronger consumer protection in Nigeria’s pay-TV industry.

Since Nigerians have refused to start a similar business that will rival these folks, price hikes are inevitable. Nobody should summon them. A seller has a right to sell services at any price he deems good; that's why competition is good in business.

Honestly, South African business owners in Nigeria don see us Finish say our Regulatory bodies and National Assembly and even NLC are toothless bulldogs that can't stop Multichoice from having their ways always.
.
Multichoice and other South African business just indiscriminately increase prices without any recourse to regulatory bodies directives Knowing nothing will happen and Nigerians go still pay.
They have increased prices indiscriminately so much that subscribers are forced to settle for useless lower bouquets that they can afford.
Because of high price I have been forced to settle for Yanga package. Now they have increased price again.

The Regulatory bodies should just Seal off all Multichoice offices in Nigeria and tell them to come and negotiate prices before they can operate in Nigeria.
Shut down their businesses and make them come to their senses.
Na Multichoice go lose their biggest Market.

Previous summons even by the national assembly did not yield fruit for the common Nigeria.

This time, am not expecting something different

Empty and useless summons.
They should summon MTN and Airtel instead for increasing their data plans outrageously.

The f000ls are out again. There are other cable tv providers. These idiots should stop dictating to private companies how they fix their prices, you are not the one paying the salaries of their workers.

If you can't afford DSTV, go for startimes.

Do you really believe this is the first time such ineffective comment has been made?
WAKE UP CALL for which Nigerians? You need to wake up because the same NIGERIANS will pay even if the price is increased to 500k a month for cable TV.

Honestly, consumers like us are no longer finding this situation amusing. Prices have increased by 100% or more compared to what customers were paying three years ago.

Very stupid, nonsensical and deceptive "investigative hearing" by fccpc. Btw, dem take dstv swear for some Nigerians ni. Must you watch dstv? Just play around online or ask AI and you'd be able to access many of the channels on dstv free with 4k clarity. Stop wasting your money on dstv.
