GAC, APC Not Consulted Before Obasa’s Removal — Chairman by iwaeda: 11:53pm On Feb 28
The Chairman of Governance Advisory Council in Lagos State, Tajudeen Olusi, says the council was not consulted before Mr Mudashiru Obasa was impeached as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly.

Olusi, speaking with newsmen in an interview at his residence in Lagos, on Friday, said that lawmakers neither consulted the All Progressives Congress nor the council.

He said that the council should not be dragged into the leadership crisis that saw the removal of Obasa and his replacement by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Meranda.

He said, “Members of the GAC are not members of the Lagos State House of Assembly to allegedly be behind the removal of Obasa. It can’t be true.

“We read it also that morning. The lawmakers carried it out without consulting the party and those of us in the GAC. That is our position.

“We invited all of them and insisted that all of them are products of the party. They lodged their complaints and we listened to them.

“I blamed them for one thing and that is for not lodging the complaints earlier before the party.

“It is for the party to decide, they (lawmakers) have no absolute power to remove and install their leaders.

“Nobody can become a member of the House of Assembly unless sponsors by a political party and the sponsors are the inspectors.:

The APC apex leader said that the speakership crisis in the House remained a problem between Obasa and his colleagues in the House.

“The problem is the speaker (Obasa) and his colleagues which had led to his removal. It is a disputer among them,” he added.

He said no organ of government was totally independent of the other, adding that the party, GAC and another high-powered committee set up was working tirelessly to resolve the dispute.

“Currently, there is a high-powered committee of the party led by Chief Bisi Akande and members, including Aremo Olusegun Osoba, former APC National Vice Chairman, South-west, Chief Pius Akinyelure and others.

“They are working and making efforts to resolve the matter. I know they are in consultation with the House of Assembly, Obasa and the other Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

“Those of us in the GAC and the Chairman of the Party, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi are doing all within our power to assist the committee,” he added.

Speaking on dissenting views expressed by some members of the GAC, Olusi said that those who spoke expressed their individual views, which they were entitled to, not the GAC’s.

“One day, and very soon the matter will be settled. Disputes and differences are facts of life and dispute resolution and party mechanisms are also there.

“You leave us alone, as a party we are conscious of our responsibility and that of the House of Assembly; we are going to do all within our powers to resolve the dispute,

“The overall responsibility is on the party,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the leadership crisis took a new dimension on Thursday when the impeached speaker stormed the Assembly and insisted that he was never removed

Obasa, who spoke with reporters shortly after he arrived at the assembly complex with some security personnel, said that he had returned to the assembly to take charge.

The visit was Obasa’s first appearance at the complex after he was impeached by his colleagues in January over alleged misconduct and financial impropriety.

The impeached speaker returned on a day the security details of Meranda were withdrawn.

I don't believe members of the House of Assembly could impeach the Speaker in such underhand way (while the House was on holiday), unless there was someone in the shadows pulling the strings.

That someone must:

1) have a beef with the Speaker

2) be in government, and

3) have access to a lot of resources to turn the heads of the House members.

In my opinion, only one person in Lagos State meets all 3 criteria.

In my opinion, the following outcomes are LIKELY (not certain) to happen:

1. Mr Obasa will remain the Speaker, one way or the other, and possibly resign later on his own terms.

2. The powers supporting Mr Obasa will, over the next few weeks, peel off a few of the rebel House members to Mr Obasa's side with money and promise of a ticket in 2027.

3. The rest of the rebels who refuse to budge, including the lady Speaker, will not get APC ticket come 2027.

Some of the rebels will already know this, hence why they will feel they may as well fight to the end.

4. APC Lagos State branch will keep out of the crisis so as not to give the rebel House members a legal justification to decamp to another party.

How can an impeached speaker remain a speaker?
Did you mean re-elected as the speaker?
No resignation unless a re-election happen.
And come to think of it, why will he ever resign if he gets back the position?
After all, he is a very strong grass-root politician.

2. The powers supporting Mr Obasa will, over the next few weeks, peel off a few of the rebel House members to Mr Obasa's side with money and promise of a ticket in 2027.
You are correct.

3. The rest of the rebels who refuse to budge, including the lady Speaker, will not get APC ticket come 2027.

Some of the rebels will already know this, hence why they will feel they may as well fight to the end.
You are assuming none of the rebels are grassroot politicians and none of them have
their local power broker/godfather behind them.

What matters most to APC is power, punishment of rebels comes second.
The featherweight rebels may be dropped but the ones who can pull or manipulate voters will scale
through at least until the next governor's tenure.

APC's choice in some constituency will be either to lose the seat or field the incumbents because
you don't expect Obasa to go run election in Eti-Osa for example when he has his own home battles
to fight.

Also, Sanwo-Olu has been claiming neutrality but I believe he is secretly rooting for the rebels.
And given that he is in his second term, he cannot be blackmailed into supporting Obasa, moreover,
the return of Obasa will make his remaining years more difficult as Obasa will come back for vengeance.

4. APC Lagos State branch will keep out of the crisis so as not to give the rebel House members a legal justification to decamp to another party.
They won't decamp even if the APC intervenes.
That is a loophole to declare their seats vacant and a lengthy court battle over authenticity
as obtained in Rivers.

The so-called GAC was just an arrangement for Tinubu to maintain plausible deniability. They have the illusion of power but Tinubu has ALWAYS called the shots. He only needs GAC to take the fall on his behalf and he's ever ready to throw anyone under the bus. They call it being a master strategist but we have another name for it where I come from.

This is one of the numerous downsides of godfatherism in politics.

Office holders have to consult with some party leaders before they can take decisions, even if those decisions affect the governed.

Ambode was booted out of office not because he didn’t have the best interest of the people at heart, but because he failed to carry party leaders along.

Ask them why Ambode was rejected and you’ll hear it’s because he stepped on some people’s toes.

If not that Lagos is a one party state and has been like that for a long time, tell me why one party leader will expect lawmakers elected by the people to consult with them before taking decisions that bother with their house.

I suspect IP0Bs hand in the whole thing.. they want Obasa out so Lagos will go back to business as usual for them under the Meranda woman.. una don fail again.

Lagos will revert to being a full Yoruba State by 2030 and there is nothing any 'atohunrinwa' outsider can do about it.. take your cosmopolitan nonsese to Enugu or Anambra.

So the so called progressive LASHA needs the GAC permission to impeach a corrupt fella like Obasa? Where is the so called independence of the legislative in this nation?

Must every one of them be willing stooge of some political godfathers or governors? Is this really autocracy or democracy?

Is Lagos house of assembly an Apc affair or apc family house, the house is made up of Apc and opposition elected to represent their constituencies and not Tinubu-encies

Is it in the constitution that members must collect approval from party chairman or FG before making decisions

Tinubu as reduce politics to motor park politics, cos this is not democracy

They were on recess, so who convened the . meeting, to the best of my knowledge only the speaker have the sole power to reconvene a meeting.
