Drug Abuse: Osogbo Residents Cry Out As Mad People Take Over Roads by Heavens1stson: 10:01pm On Mar 03
Residents in Osogbo have expressed concerns over the influx of mentally ill persons to the town.

Some residents who spoke with journalists on Monday in Osogbo said the number of such persons on major roads in the town was worrisome.

The respondents called on the state government to urgently address the issue and evacuate them off the streets for rehabilitation or return them to their states.

Biola Awosun, a resident, said some mentally ill persons on the street were victims of their nemesis.

Mr Awosun attributed drug abuse and diabolic activities as some factors responsible for the large number of mental health cases on the streets.

He appealed to the state government to do something urgently to evacuate them off the streets for the safety of the residents.

Another resident, Adenike Faponda, a trader at Ejigbo motor park, believed that some mentally unstable people on the streets were brought from other states.

Ms Faponda urged the government to put such people into psychiatric homes where they could be rehabilitated.

However, Andrew Dosunmu, a psychologist, said the majority of people with mental illness on the streets of Osogbo were a result of drug abuse.

Mr Dosunmu said many psychotropic substances have been introduced into society, and their abuse accounted for a large number of mental disorders.

The psychologist said there were different types of mental cases like schizophrenia, depression and childhood developmental disorders, among others.

“The one that is so persistent, especially in Osun, is among the youth, which is a mental illness caused by drug and substance abuse, which is commonly called addiction.

“It is very high and even alarming, and among the adolescents, from the ages of 16 to 45. This is the period when hard drugs are on the increase,” he said.

Mr Dosunmu said all hands must be on deck to raise the children for a better and brighter future for the youths.

“It is a collective effort of the society; the government cannot do everything alone,” he said.

Also, Dunmilola Akinola, a nurse at Asubiaro Hospital, Osogbo, said the government was doing its best to ensure the necessary attention was given to mentally ill persons in the town.

Ms Akinola, however, urged the state’s task force officers to do more to evacuate such persons from the roads.

Meanwhile, the state government has said it was doing its best to see that mentally unstable people were taken off the streets and rehabilitated.

Richard Oyegbami, the permanent secretary at the Osun Ministry of Environment, told journalists that the ministries of environment and sanitation, youths, sports, and special needs were interrelated and worked together to rehabilitate mentally ill persons.

Mr Oyegbami said the government was doing its best to ensure that mentally ill people were taken off the streets.

“The government is not just watching,” he said. “When they see mentally ill persons, there is a particular place they take them to get them rehabilitated.”

Meanwhile Oshogbo people on nairaland and twitter are busy scavenging for drug related news involving "Igbos" in India and Thailand. The same way they were fixated on ESN and IPOB while their parents were being forced into IDP camps in Benin republic.. Thier Obas being murdered for fun by herdsmen..

Severe hardship, frustration, depression, lack of proper health care or its unaffordabilities, also atimes hard drugs, all contribute to this increase in number of mad people.
Some of them may have voted the calamity called Tinubu, with the impression that he is from Iragbeji Osun state, which Osogbo happens to be the capital. That there condition will be better than others, but the bad news is that they only know them during elections and after which they now share their loots with their cabals, regardless of tribe or religion.
That's the saddest reality, the vulnerable masses and there online touts must live with.

Gradually Yorubas are losing omoluabi ethos to youths with drug-induced mental illness all because of leadership failure.. oju gbogbo yin ma ja se.
The drug peddling tribe have turned Yorubaland to their market without anyone checkmating them. Shey you people don't want to be tagged tribalists, ehnn oju yin a ja.

Let the destruction of Yoruba youthful population continue.. that toddler you're raising in isolation will one day go out and taste hard drugs, then your opolo eye go clear.

Lol
Agbadorian reprobates and their peculiar strand of village stupidity..
This one is blaming the "drug tribe' for the menace called Oshogbo weed. Always pointing accusing fingers elsewhere. Always living in self denials..

You guys gave this country the term "agbero", the biggest drug consuming louts ever known to humanity. Do you know that in many Nigerian languages there is no word for agbero? Fela, who used to mould weed as long as 3rd mainland bridge was from the "drug tribe", abi?

Na dust from brown roofs dey disturb your watery brain..

Removing sentiments or tribalism, this has become a common issue all over the country today and the youths are mostly the victims. On the streets of Benin city, you will see mentally challenged guys and ladies roaming, so also in many states I have been to. They are also usually the first dancers in parties, they are already on the dancefloors swaying their bodies while the musicians or DJs are still testing their sound systems cheesy grin

And this very thread refuses to get to the front page...
I mean, A generation of Oshogbo youths packing themselves off to hell with drugs is not considered front page worthy....We are waiting for the headlines that fit the "agenda" like "Emeka Okoro caught at Bangkok Airport with Cocain"... ,or "Chukwuma Okafor caught in India with heroine"..
