My young cousin sister just told me she got a visa to travel to Cairo and ‘work’ but I don’t trust this ‘work’ narrative.

The impression I have of these Arab cities ( Cairo, Dubai, etc) is that African girls are trafficked there to go and prostitute for their traffickers.

But people who have information about what happens in Cairo can tell me.

Do Nigerians genuinely work in Cairo or is my little cousin about to be a victim of traffickers?

What kind of work

That's a red flag.

If she can't provide those things, then it's probably a house help job which might lead to her being sexually abused or exploited. She won't see this picture now so make her understand it. Go to YouTube and get videos of African girls being abused by their masters in Arab countries.

Also let her understand that when Israel attacked Lebanon late last year, Lebanese people locked their African house helps and Nannies inside their apartments in high rise buildings and ran with their families leaving those African migrants working for them as domestic staffs stranded and exposed to death as Israeli bombs rained down their buildings. It was a horror to watch.

So warn her ahead and bring all these to her knowledge so that she won't claim to be ignorant tomorrow. Just do your best in enlightening her and leave the rest for her

It’s the reason I’m concerned.

And somebody is up there saying I’m baiting comments.

People think everyone is as jobless as they are.

I don't even want to know the details. Just save your cousin while you still can or you might regret it. She might even dislike you and call you (EP) enemy of progress for now, but I can tell you that you have a duty to come through for your cousin. Forget about the money she has spent so far on this endeavor.

The first question you need to ask yourself is: what is the GDP of the country she is intending to travel to? What is their GDP per capita? compare that to Nigeria's figures and see if there will be any opportunity for your cousin.

As far as I know, Egypt is not doing considerably better than Nigeria. Also bear in mind that the country, like many countries in Africa and the rest of the world, is a highly unequal society. This means even the GDP per capita will not show you how well-off the average citizen is. There is almost no skill your cousin has, that at least 100,000 Egyptians do not have. And then comes the language barrier.

The issue of being looked down upon due to who she is because of her race, is one I will advice you not to ignore. Yes, it is real, and it is in such a level, she truly feel bad to face.

The issue with racism there,...they do not have an idea that they are truly hurting you. Its the sense of it is not there veruly much. For example, they can call you a slave to your face! Ayan Hirsi Ali faced the same thing in Saudi Arabia.

Of course, not everyone does this, it would be ridiculous to think everyone in those countries is that mean. But like I said, the anti-black attitude is highest in thr Arab world than it is anywhere else in the world.

The reason the west has made so much progreas in race relations better than enywhere else is because of the constitution and the civil rights movement that took place in those lands. Elsewhere, it has never really been an issue so thise societies have not changed very much. This is why they can call you the arabic word for slave without any hint that they are hurting you in anyway.

When it comes to where black people feel safest to live and work, it is here in sub-saharan Africa followed by the collective west. Anywhere else, just know you will be at the bottom of the social pyramid.

You must understand that the entire Arab world, all those countries, have legal, accepted human trafficking. The kafala system is legal human trafficking, and foreign domestic workers have no protection under Egyptian laws. And in their culture, human trafficking is accepted, as well as abuse of foreign workers. Arabs are animals.

Anyone who tells you that they're working happily there is lying to you.

It doesn't matter what visa someone is granted or what job they make it look like you have. It's just a way to get you there. And they do it to men and women, and every type of worker. There are guys that go there to play soccer and then they get trafficked as domestic workers.

US Department of State 2024 Trafficking in Persons Report: Egypt
https://www.state.gov/reports/2024-trafficking-in-persons-report/egypt/

Foreign domestic workers – who are not protected under Egyptian labor laws – primarily from Syria, Yemen, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nigeria, Sudan, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, and parts of West Africa are highly vulnerable to forced labor; employers at times require them to work excessive hours, confiscate their passports, withhold their wages, deny them food and medical care, refuse to provide them with work visas, and subject them to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. Some employers file false claims of theft to further exploit domestic workers. Traffickers subject women and girls, including refugees and migrants from Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East to sex trafficking in Egypt.

Can you imagine the effrontery of who is in the wrong to call who is right 'dummy'? Many of guys are unteachable.

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like 'Cousin Sister' or 'Cousin Brother'. What happened to 'male cousin' and 'female cousin'?

This is one reason our children speak and write mostly wrong English. Because those they look up to and those who teach them are so poor in English language. And worse thing is they don't even realize they're wrong. Like the fellow you quoted. You could see his arrogance in trying to "correct" the right person. And many of these errors stem from people trying to "convert", not translate, their mother tongue into English language. Some try to transfer pidgin English to Queens English. And the mutilation of English language is on the increase in our schools.

My former secretary worked in Cairo for 6 months, and it was a good experience. I've heard of people doing very well there. But there are areas she should avoid, cos not everywhere is very safe for women

That’s the problem. The girl just has SSCE and her work experience in Nigeria has been Receptionist and Waitress jobs.

She has promised to come see me tomorrow, I hope to ask her these questions.

Are these the skills she has to offer the people in Egypt? And she thinks the Egyptians do not have an abundance of these skills? There is nothing she has to offer, that Egypt does not have in excess; so, tell her to not go and if she is proving too stubborn, report her to NAPTIP.

Even if she provides a letter headed contract (mostly house help roles on paper) your family shouldn't let her go....she will end up being physically and sexually abused as violence against Egyptian women and girls in Egypt is very high, your cousin being a foreigner makes her more vulnerable.
You are right.
I had a friend who was a victim

Thank you very much.

The thing is that she confided in me with this information. According to her, even her mother is not aware she’s traveling.

Now, I could try to paint these awry pictures for her but I don’t want to be the reason she doesn’t take a chance at life and tomorrow she could blame me for advising her wrongly when she had a chance at life.

I had told her one time not to go to Dubai that every Nigerian girl in Dubai was into prostitution but she was adamant. Gave me the example of a mother who is in Dubai with her daughters and they are doing decent jobs.

My problem is that I don’t have much information on what goes on in Cairo.
