PRESS RELEASE
SENATE SURVEILLANCE TEAM ON CRUDE OIL THEFT (SST-COT) Commences Operations

The Senate Adhoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft, Chaired by Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko, hereby notifies all Stakeholders—including Host Communities, Community Associations, Security Operatives, Government Agencies, and All Entities within the Oil and Gas Sector—of the Formal Appointment of its State Representatives. These Representatives will commence their duties with immediate effect.

Recognizing the grave impact of Crude Oil theft on Nigeria’s economy and National Security, the committee has constituted the Senate Surveillance Team on Crude Oil Theft (SST-COT) to intensify Monitoring and Intelligence gathering across the nine Oil-Producing States. The team’s mandate includes both direct engagements and covert surveillance to identify challenges, recommend solutions, and enhance security within the sector.

The SST-COT is structured as follows:

Overall Team Lead

One State Representative per Oil-Producing State, supported by a Deputy State Representative

A Dedicated Task Force to execute surveillance and enforcement measures


This initiative requires the full cooperation of all relevant agencies, security forces, and stakeholders—both national and international—to curb crude oil theft and safeguard Nigeria’s vital resources.

I think the senate is overeaching itself with such an arrangement. This is purely within the purview of the executive arm. The senate should focus on their core function of lawmaking. Which one be surveillance again when the executive arm already has navy, civil defence, tantita and others already doing thesame thing?
