The Effects Of Fuel Subsidy Removal! by Krucifax(m): 1:27am On Jan 02, 2012 |
A lot of commentators local and international are busy advocating the removal of fuel subsidies. In their defence they cite other nations where it was implemented, lauded all the apparent benefits whilst curiously quiet on the attendant tragedies. Equally they make a impressive long list of governmental and social projects where the realised funds can be reinvested. All of this equates to the removal of fuel subsidy being some kind of magic bullet that will solve all our country's problems. Well here's the thing,i think the sudden and arbitrary removal of subsidies is a grave mistake!!! Life as you all know it is about to change for the very worst, let me expatiate. In lay terms a removal of subsidies is essentially a reallocation of funds period!! Were this a govt with a good track record of positive social initiatives,we could all be saying "we trust them to do good with the monies". However the Nigerian govt has historically so far failed to make the populace benefit from any windfalls. The obvious immediate effect is already here for all to see,so don't take my word for it!! Pump prices have already jumped from N65 to N140+(dependent on location). For those still wondering what will happen here's a nonexhuastive list: 1. Your next transport fare will likely double in price. 2. You'll probably stop filling your tank. 3. You'll use the generator/plant a lot less often. 4. Your consumer goods will likely double in price. 5. Many small businesses reliant on fuel will fold. 6. Attendant increment in unemployment due to point five. 7. Increment in crime due to points 5 & 6. 8. Localised pockets of social unrest due to points 5,6 & 7. Whilst on paper the tenets of subsidy removal is to aid infrastructural improvement by untying govt funds,i fear this is poorly executed overkill. Current mediocre levels of govt investment and crippling poverty percentages in Nigeria means this is too much too soon. As they say "what value is medicine if it kills the patient"? |

This is where I can bet all my life's worth that Nigeria will FAIL, This Subsidy-removal is a practical solution but execution is where we have always dropped the ball without fail 1: Cost of Governance must be commensurate with the harsh economic realities (across all arms of government) 2: CBN must become Independent and Autonomous (and Protected by the Constitution) 3: Corruption Fight must discard the drama, politics and lazy execution that has become our modus-operandi since the days of Shagari. 4: FG must abolish some ministries whose activities serve as sink-holes for stealing scarce resources. e.g National Space Research and Development Agency All of the above and whatever is necessary to make Nigeria GREAT again.. will never be executed .. only farcical moves will be made.. but true execution will be absent.. |
