Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by uchenageme(m): 1:27pm On Jan 02, 2012
I need your help, my friends, i was involved in an accident last Saturday with my car, I was on about 60kmph on a hilly road when the front driver side tire went off suddenly and the car crashed, luckily no one was injured, but the car, well the bottom plate got scratched and all the ATF leaked out and that seemed to be the only injury to the car, but when the bottom place was removed and patched up, and refilled with oil, the gear was not working properly, and even up till now the vehicle is not going into reverse gear,  i was able to drive the car from the scene to my place after fixing the bottom plate, but now the car is still moving forward but cannot move backward even when the gear is in reverse. I  need suggestions please what can be the problem.

The car is a nissan maxima, automatic gear.

thank you, guys i have depended on your advise over the months and i need you once again,

Two things I'm not clear on - you said "the front driver side tire went off", what exactly do you mean? Did the tyre burst, come off the rim? Or did the whole wheel detach from the hub?

And you said "the bottom place was removed and patched up", I don't get it. Do you mean it was ripped open, and welded?
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by uchenageme(m): 2:02pm On Jan 02, 2012
@SIENA, The nuts were not properly screwed to hold the wheel so the wheel came off from the hub, the bottom plate was ripped open in the crash so it was removed and welded.

Thank you for your response
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by Nobody: 2:07pm On Jan 02, 2012
I would have replaced the transmission oil pan, not welded it.

There is also a possibility the valve body was damaged when the pan was ripped open. The pan is very shallow, so not much clearance between it and the valve body. That is where I would be looking. The ATF must be the right grade for your car, and the right volume. I have a feeling though, that your transmission is bust, and a replacement is your only option. Repairs can be costly, and it's a specialist job, not one performed by your mechanic.
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by uchenageme(m): 2:19pm On Jan 02, 2012
The opening is not large just a crack, and for your other suggestion, if the transmission oil is low or overfilled what effects can that have on the transmission, I ask this because initially we could not find enough transmission oil to fill the pot so we used about half of the required volume and i was able to drive the car to my place though it wasnt moving smoothly, but this morning I got some more fluid and filled it, I'm even thinking I may have overfilled it and still I'm getting the same result
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by Nobody: 6:50pm On Jan 02, 2012
What Maxima model (year) is yours? I presume too that your SES light should be on. If so, have it scanned for trouble codes. Yes, even though you clearly have transmission issues the scan should enable us to determine what precisely should be done. And as for the quantity of ATF required, that should be stated in your owner's manual.[Do you have one?] Good luck.
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by uchenageme(m): 8:35pm On Jan 02, 2012
200o model, d SES light is nt on nd iyes i hv manual i hv actually overfilled the quantity advised b4 looking at d manual
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by Nobody: 11:40pm On Jan 02, 2012
The valve body of the 5th gen Maxima (your model) is underneath the transmission unlike that of the 6th gen which is placed at the side. It seems, as Siena has pointed out, that you've damaged the valve body. It just might be that the remaining (internal) portions of the transmission are unaffected, and in which case only the valve body needs attention--i.e., replacement. The transmission of the 5th gen is quite resilient, and I suspect that some of the wires or connections in your valve body have been ripped off with your reverse function being probably most affected. I'd still suggest nonetheless that you have the car scanned.

Pray tell, what ATF did you use by the way?

nissparts:

Pray tell, what ATF did you use by the way?
I was going to come to that; but it seems, for the moment, some physical damage had already been wreaked on the VB, and in which case the type of ATF used might avail little.

It could make matters worse that's for sure
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by uchenageme(m): 6:37pm On Jan 03, 2012
I got some good mechanic to look at it today, he talked about some blockage in the transmission, he wants to take the car to his workshop, for scanning and detailed check, I will keep you updated,

Thank you
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by miccodb(m): 12:28pm On Jan 04, 2012
what kind of scanning? i suspect fowl play here. what blockage? and i wan to get this clear. is it that ur gear lever moves to reverse but the car wont move or the lever wont even move?
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by Nobody: 12:50pm On Jan 04, 2012
miccodb:

The gear lever certainly moves into reverse, but the transmission won't select reverse.

Bro, I've got a feeling you're venturing into the unknown, and possibly more cost with little gain.

What grade of ATF was used in the first instance? You never answered that query. People are trying to help you, but it's virtually impossible when it would appear you're not forthcoming with details.

Why can't this guy scan your car at your home? In the state your tranny's in right now, you shouldn't even be driving it. I would have thought your "mechanic" would know better.

Good luck.
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by onezirozan: 1:49pm On Jan 04, 2012
I see this happen all too often.
You tell someone, 'I suggest you get that part replaced'
The person thinks, 'It is still working small small now' 'replace ke?'
My fellow nairalanders ignorance and poverty is not good
May God prosper us all so that we can listen to experts and take their advice
If we shortchange ourselves concerning our health, na motor we go spend money put?
As a victim of cheap ATF use and kalo-kalo auto gear box repairers, I would always advise us to heed an experts advice
Thanks Siena, costee for your advice dont relent

Since we are talking about transmissions here i need help. i drive a Nissan Maxima SE 2000 model. When i put the lever to drive the gear engages smoothly from the 1st to the 2nd gear but when its time to change from 2nd to 3rd the engine revvs before the gear engages the 3rd, 3rd to 4th is also smooth. This has been on for a while but 6months later my TCS off and SLIP lights came on. Anyone have an idea what exactly could be wrong and can i have an idea of the cost to fix such? Thanks.
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by Piedpiper(m): 1:57pm On Jan 04, 2012
@SIENA
He may well be towing it you know?
Most likely he intends to use the old rope a dope trick.
You know, get it to the workshop, strip some parts off and hit you with a huge repair bill.
Then you cant say no, as the car is already at the workshop, with some components off.
The next thing is to milk you like a well fed cow for every last of money . grin

Oga Femi,

You are doing the same thing the OP has just been advised against.
Have your car scanned first or else risk spending 200k on a replacement transmission minus labor only to find out when you do listen that a 10k sensor would have sorted you out.

Do the scan before anything else and post the result.
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by femionasan(m): 2:59pm On Jan 04, 2012
Oga doyen, i did a scan on the car and only the speed sensor came out as the problem, i changed the speed sensor and still have the same issue. I have refused to allow anyone touch the transmission cos i know how delicate and how expensive it can be to get it back in order. Thats why i am trying to find out if anyone here has had a similar experience.

ok! i can do the scan for him but the truth is some symptoms are quite obvious and 1 can tell even without a scan but a scan should come 1st especially wen it wont cost much.
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by dDoyen: 3:03pm On Jan 04, 2012
There should be 2 speed sensors on the maxima.

See this thread

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=836261.msg9871612#msg9871612

Im sure you still have the speed sensor code.
He does not need a new transmission
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by femionasan(m): 3:10pm On Jan 04, 2012
Thanks Doyen but after the replacement of the sensor i still had the same issue but the sensor didnt come up as the culprit. The thing i noticed about the speed sensor was that whenever i traveled out of state after a long drive the gear shifts back to 3 from 4 and does not go back to 4 until i have parked the car for about 30minutes to an hour and then it starts to shift smoothly dont forget that the shift from 2nd gear to 3rd gear is still a problem. I guess i will take it to another place for proper scanning i am not doing anything until i am convinced about where the issue is coming from.

Thanks Siena, the recommended ATF is Dextron III but what we have here is Oando brand Dextron II and that is what i used, I will see the mechanic later today, he seems to be professional in his approach, please keep the comments coming, I'm not a mechanical engineer but im learning a lot from you guys.

Thank you.
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by onezirozan: 5:34pm On Jan 04, 2012
How does one get Dexron III ATF in 9ja?
Re: Help Needed On My Crashed Nissan Maxima by nissparts(m): 6:49pm On Jan 04, 2012
Maxlife Dexron 111 Atf N3500
Nissan matic D N4000

I'd suggest you have it scanned again and let's see the codes pulled. I suggest too that you open your thread so that yours will remain the primary focus of discussion; as it is this is thread jacking, and which is not encouraged. Cheers.

I would suggest Maxlife Dextron III; the matic series apply to Nissan models from 2002  with automatic transmissions
(Except GT-R).

I'm not happy that you didn't ask him of the result of the scan he conducted.
