Patience And Its Types by AbuAbdirrahmaan: 11:51pm On Mar 25
"The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of the guidance and the criterion." (2:185)

Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.” (Quran 39:10)

✨ SubhanAllah, how lofty is the rank of patience in Islam! A virtue so beloved by Allah, and a light in the heart of every believer.

💎 The Prophet ﷺ said:
“No one has been given a gift better and more expansive than patience.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

📌 So what is patience (ṣabr), and how do we live by it? Scholars have divided it into three noble types:
1️⃣ Patience in Obedience to Allah:
Waking up for Fajr, attending the masjid, fasting, praying, striving in worship—it requires discipline and spiritual willpower.
💬 “…And it is difficult except for the humbly submissive.” (2:45)

2️⃣ Patience in Avoiding Disobedience:
Lowering the gaze, restraining the tongue, avoiding backbiting or falling into temptation—this too is jihad of the soul.

3️⃣ Patience over the Decree of Allah:
When trials descend—loss, illness, hardship—we remain calm, not complaining to creation, but turning our hearts to the Creator.
“…Indeed we belong to Allah, and to Him we will return.” (2:156)
This is not easy, but it is the path of the guided.

💠 And when calamity strikes, the believer can respond in four ways:
🔹 Panic – forbidden and blameworthy.
🔹 Patience – obligatory for every believer.
🔹 Contentment – recommended for the strong-hearted.
🔹 Gratitude – the highest level: to thank Allah even in the trial.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
We do not know of any trait more praised by Allah in the Qur’an than patience.”
And what about patience with people?

Sometimes the harm comes from within our homes—parents, spouses, children, or siblings. Other times from ignorant or abusive individuals.
✅ Be patient.
✅ Overlook.
✅ Return harm with goodness if you are able.

🕊️ “Repel [evil] with that which is better…” (41:34)

🤲 O Allah, make us among the patient whom You love. Help us remain firm through trials, content with Your decree, and grateful in all states. Forgive us, our parents, and the believers. And may Your peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, and companions.
