The near-instant mobilization of protesters to demonstrate against the federal government’s New Year Day removal of subsidy on petrol has caught the attention of the nation’s security operatives as they seek to get to the bottom of the sudden explosion of violence across the country.

The security operatives are suspecting a fifth columnist may have got into the mix and taken advantage of the situation. They are, therefore, trailing the movement of funds to some organizers of the rallies, even as organized labour gets set for mass action from Monday. Daily Sun gathered yesterday that security operatives may have started probing six marketers for allegedly bankrolling the proposed nationwide protest.

Nothing less than N1 billion is believed to have already been doled out by the marketers to some protest organisers. To further underscore government’s seriousness on the matter, it was also authoritatively gathered that the marketers, many of whom figured in the controversial Senate subsidy cabal list, may be arrested for questioning any moment from now.

Consequent upon these findings, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as well as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been placed on the alert to check curious withdrawals by some marketers to fund any nationwide protest. Investigation showed that the apex bank and the EFCC are monitoring commercial banks on curious withdrawals. However, a Deputy Governor with CBN who spoke on condition of annonimity said “if anybody is concocting huge withdrawals to finance a national strike, it will fail”. He further added: “I think we should all rally round the government to allow this deregulation to succeed. There will be initial pains but Nigerians will enjoy the benefits.”

According to findings by security agencies, the concerned marketers were alleged to be working in concert with some trade union leaders to make the country ungovernable. It was gathered that the security reports had indicted the affected marketers of budgeting over N1billion to frustrate the withdrawal of fuel subsidy. It was also learnt that the security agencies uncovered a secret meeting between the marketers and some Senators and members of the House of Representatives on how to compromise the National Assembly to reject the withdrawal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

“We are probing some marketers for taking undue advantage of issues raised by Labour to cause mayhem nationwide… Security agencies have identified six of the marketers, who are the arrowheads of this covert plot to bring down the government.” A reliable source told a select group yesterday. According to the source, “the marketers have voted over N1billion to hijack the labour strike to make the nation ungovernable and some marketers will soon be invited for questioning. And whoever is involved might be tried accordingly.

“These marketers are unhappy because the removal of subsidy will put an end to cooking of records to get refund from government and diversion of subsidized imported to neighbouring African countries where they make triple profit.
“They are also angry that it will no longer be business as usual. They are some of the beneficiaries of fuel subsidy.
“Unfortunately, they have made labour leaders to believe that they are backing Nigerian workers for a just cause.”

Re: 6 Oil Marketers In Trouble For Funding Fuel Riots by Parisgoodman(m): 6:19am On Jan 05, 2012
Security agents are worried over what a
source said they see as a covert attempt
to fuel the workers’ strike due to begin
on Monday. Under security watch are some
marketers and labour leaders, who are
believed to be planning to cause chaos
nationwide. Six marketers, who are said to be under
probe for alleged covert financial support
for some trade union leaders for the
impending strike, may be arrested for
interrogation, sources said. Commercial banks have been under
surveillance by the Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN) and the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
following reports of likely huge cash
withdrawals by some marketers to back the labour movement. Security agents are said to have
uncovered plans by some aggrieved
marketers to bankroll the action with
over N1billion slush funds. It was gathered that a secret meeting
was held between some marketers and
members of the National Assembly on
Tuesday night till early Wednesday to
lobby the lawmakers to restore fuel
subsidy in the 2012 Budget. A security source, who cannot be named
because of his position, said: “There is
more to the strike. Some aggrieved
marketers, who have been importing
nothing but benefiting from fuel subsidy,
are out to destabilise the government. “We may have no cause than to
crackdown on a few marketers trying to
destroy the nation’s economy for selfish
ends. “We are probing some marketers for
taking undue advantage of the issues
raised by Labour to cause mayhem
nationwide. “Security agencies have identified six of
the marketers, who are the arrowheads
of this covert plot to bring down the
government. “These marketers have voted over
N1billion to hijack the labour strike to
make the nation ungovernable. “Some of these marketers will soon be
invited for questioning. And whoever is
involved might be tried accordingly.” He did not name the marketers, who the
source said “are unhappy because the
removal of subsidy will put an end to
cooking of records to get refund from
government and diversion of subsidised
imported fuel to neighbouring countries where they make triple profit”. He went on: “They are also angry that it
will no longer be business-as-usual. They
are some of the beneficiaries of fuel
subsidy. “Unfortunately, they have made labour
leaders to believe that they are backing
Nigerian workers for a just cause.” Responding to a question, the source
added: “These marketers do not even
want labour to explore the dialogue
option being offered by the Federal
Government. But the CBN Deputy Governor
(Operations), Mr. Tunde Lemo, said: “If
anybody is concocting huge withdrawals
to finance a national strike, it will fail. “I think we should all rally round the
government to allow this deregulation to
succeed. There will be initial pains but
Nigerians will enjoy the benefits.” Pressed further on the security reports,
Lemo said: “I am not aware of anything
like that yet, but I will be surprised if
anybody does that. I don’t think anybody
should contemplate that. And whoever
does that will face the wrath of the law.”

Gosh! What is actually wrong with Nigerians? Who planted greed in our veins? I cant imagine people trying to acquire everything; in a place like earth when everything is empty, vanity upon vanishing and some people still don't understand. God forbid!

"SOME" marketers, "SOME" withdrawals, "SOME WICKEDNESS", "SOME", "SOME", "SOME"

Does this type of propaganda show respect to those reading? What happened to the maxim "respect begets respect" when you tell us effectively with such drivel that you consider us base-minded?

In aid of propaganda, the word "SOME" is splashed around to give the impression that real work is being done when nothing is. It might thus be a good idea to replace "SOME" with specifics - many of us are reasonable and will listen to the government position if they would show respect for our intellects by not trying to sell such obviously daft stories to us as fact!

Else arrest the "SOMEs" and let us have peace!

PS: what have the marketers lost anyway? They still get theirs, don't they? So who's the dimwit?

"SOME"  S T O R Y

Nigerians are well educated, intelligent, and not of the sort of intellect that would be swayed by such tripe.

Except of course, when they become this type of government's agents and mouthpieces!

What a ridiculous super story !!!! A glaring testimony to the total stupidity of the OP and his co-travellers all united in blind and bigoted support for GEJ !!!!!! Femi Falana was one of the first to motivate "near-instant mobilization of protesters" . I suppose we can all foolishly conclude the marketers have paid off Falana same as they paid him off when he took to the Street to protest against those preventing GEJ from being sworn in to act as President. Nonsense !!!!!!

@ Topic,

an attempt to further punish the marketers who were given licences to import PMS despite being unqualified became disloyal by not declaring regular returns. It is this crop of people that the subsidy removal was made for; to enable the big boys control the sector appropriately. They have no technical capacity and requisite wherewithal to import and store fuel. They belong to the crop that import water as fuel OR import adulterated fuel for sale.

GEJ dares not go near the Cabal themselves. Most of us now understand why the GCON award was mandatory as given to the recipient. Naijamoviemagic for real!

This is nothing but a mere propaganda by the government even when the elites and celebrities are protesting. Can somebody tell me Mr. Femi Falana, Banky W, Seun Kuti, Mrs Gani Fawehinmi have all been compromised by the faceless marketers whose names could not be ascertain in the reports?
Re: 6 Oil Marketers In Trouble For Funding Fuel Riots by Nobody: 10:56am On Jan 05, 2012
This is some story

cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy

the height of idiocy for simpletons . subsidy or not, the major fuel marketers make their money. it is actually in their interest that the subsidy go, as the fg / nnpc are lousy business partners that  can drive you out of buiness. that was the case in 2009, when they simply stopped bringing in product because the govt was owing them huge sums.

our FG is just looking for a convenient boogeyman to blame for their corruption and incompetence
Re: 6 Oil Marketers In Trouble For Funding Fuel Riots by Abagworo(m): 11:03am On Jan 05, 2012
If nothing is done, I foresee a possible up rise in 2 weeks which might end this administration. This fuel subsidy issue which I actually supported is going to cause a revolution. Everybody on the street is against it. Please if GEJ or anybody close to Government reads this, just advice him to bury the pride and reverse the price or at least come down to 95 Naira. The arguments of the people is why refineries cannot be built unless subsidy is removed. Even Bayelsa people are not happy.

Transport from Waterlines to Garrison is now 100Naira while Port Harcourt to Aba is 1500Naira. Pure water is now 20Naira. How will a poor man survive?
Re: 6 Oil Marketers In Trouble For Funding Fuel Riots by Nobody: 11:04am On Jan 05, 2012
and in other "some" news; the marketers who stand to benefit from subsidy removal claim that "some" people are trying to tarnish their image with funds collected from "some" individuals in the presidency. "some" sources in the presidency however denied this
