One more thing is to factor in the population of the country to get more balanced view of the facts. For example, Equatorial Guinea 700,401 Zimbabwe 12,000,000 . . . South Africa 49,991,300 Kenya 40,512,682 . . Nigeria 158,423,180 This should help to put things in perspective. |

Nchara: Yes, that is clear from his post but you don't compare an apple to a watermelon! A 90% of 1 M cannot be compared to 50% of 100 M. It is important to point that out so as to keep things in perspective. |

Nchara: Sure, like the ones from other regions are any better. We see them on NL everyday so whats your point? Take it or leave it, a very high percentage of Nigerians are barely literate. You doubt me? Look at the way supposedly educated people write on NL. Misspellings and gbagauns galore. How many people on here can write a proper sentence devoid of grammatical errors and comprehension mistakes? Keep deceiving yourself. 5 sentences; 4 errors and one incredible gbagaun, You dey there dey blame North. Abeg, shift comot for road jo. Hypocrite. Jonathan and his wife have Phds: WHERE ARE THEY FROM?! North too abi? |

Well this list is just a list. Egyptians are not cowards, and had the "literacy" to riot in their millions to effect change in a country that usually has light, better roads, better stadiums, and a better economy than Nigeria. What has all the education that Nigerians (especially Southerners) done for the nation, even for their towns or selves? |

A friend of my noticed when he went to Kenya that even the poor are very good English speakers, he said in one of the hotels he stayed the Gardner expressed himself in impeccable English he was stunned. I know Zimbabweans are good English speakers too, even the down and trodden, you see them express themselves explicitly in front of the cameras when given harrowing tales of the economic woes and hardship they are going through. This kind of down and trodden people in Naija "go just dey nack pidgin dey go" . Just an Observation! it seems the % accredicted to Kenya and Zimbabwe are justifiable. |

Speaking English is definitely NOT a standard for judging literacy or educational levels of a society. I believe in having good knowledge and command of whatever language, including English, but it is not the most important. People speak Chinese, Japanese, French, etc and are just as educated and bright! |

People speak Chinese, Japanese, French, etc and are just as educated and bright! True to that, but we must not lose sight that this people in Southern African can still speak their various mother tongue adequately making them highly impressionable and knowledgeable when compared to Japanese or Chinese who are extremely useless when it comes to learning other peoples language. |
