A man arrested at the Borno State Governor’s Lodge over the deadly Madalla Christmas Day bombing escaped from police custody on Sunday while he was being conveyed to a location in Abaji area of Abuja, Daily Trust learnt yesterday.
Boko Haram suspect Kabiru Sokoto was arrested at the weekend during a police raid on the lodge, where he sneaked in through a friend who was given accommodation to stay overnight. He was said to be taken along with a Flight Lieutenant of the Nigerian Air Force to the Zone 7 Headquarters of the Police in Abuja.

Sources told Daily Trust yesterday that Kabiru was taken to Abaji on Sunday, where he is said to own a house, to allow police conduct search. But he escaped at about 5.30pm at Abaji.

Police went on a pursuit, firing shot and in the process a stray bullet hit and killed a 28-year-old man named Awwal Inuwa Ashafa, according to residents of the area.

Pandemonium ensued as people run for cover. Ashafa, who had an HND in Building Engineering from Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, was shot in the chest.

A witness said trouble started in the area when policemen from Abuja city brought Kabiru Sokoto in a Toyota Hilux van. A gang of youths flagged down the vehicle as it was heading for the Ona of Abaji’s Palace, creating a chaos during which the suspect escaped.

The police had earlier taken the suspect to a house he owned at Abaji to conduct search and were on their way to the traditional head’s palace when the youths saw him in handcuffs and then blocked the road, the witness said.

Kabiru seized the opportunity created by the youths and escaped. Meanwhile, the police fired shots in the air to disperse the youths, but one of the bullets hit a young man.

Our reporter, observed soldiers, riot police and men of the FCT Special Anti-Robbery Squad positioned at various junctions in Abaji, while a police armoured vehicle was also seen stationed in the town.

Abaji DPO, Superintendent Mathew Chukwkuma Okafor, was not available for comments. A senior police officer said four persons have been arrested over the incident.

But spokesman for the FCT police command Moshood Jimoh said no suspect escaped custody from either the Abaji divisional police or from any other police unit there.

So, they can't transport a single criminal, but they are quick to send battalions against unarmed peaceful protesters?

Poorly trained. Poorly paid. They can't even fire straight.

Yet they are harrasing innocent demonstrators? SMH

Every last policeman in the country should be sacked. Of what use are they?
Re: Madalla Blast: Detained Suspect Escapes by Depointer1: 6:02am On Jan 17, 2012
When should we be expecting some good news about this Boko Haram thing? Today we are happy about a arrest and tomorrow it becomes a play station catoon. I wont be surprise if the officer incharge will not be on the next national award list.

Stop asking question. . . .jump and tell your oga that justice will be denied to ibos killed if Kabiru Sokoto is allowed to escape outside the country.  They stood by Gej and rejoiced and cheered his action in Lagos. . . its time Gej and SS look out for their interest and assure justice for ibo blood. He should dispatch Dokubo to Abaji to go blow the place up and recover Kabiru.

How can a man in handcuffs, and probably leg chains, run faster than policemen, for God's sake? Those policemen should be charged for negligence of duty and aiding escape of prisoner. angry

The Northerners are adamant on embarassing Gej and exposing his incompetency and weakness, and by God's Grace, we Westerners will be the drum majors for this theater.

Kabiru Sokoto did not escape. . . he did not run!  Something happened!!!   The DPO, Chukuwma Okafor should account for the something.  Okafor is about to make a caricature of your SS/SE marriage.

I choose not to believe the story until the government comes out to confirm it. It Sounds it a badly written plot. How can a suspected terrorists in hand cuffs and probably leg chains run?

How can unharmed youth overpower armed policemen in a vehicle conveying a terrorist?

How did the youths know that the police and the suspect would be coming and so organize themselves in numbers to accost the car?

Why did the police need to take the suspect with them for their searches?

Why would the police need to take a terrorist suspect to pay a courtesy visit to a traditional ruler in the middle of an investigation.

Please someone should tell the script writers to write a better plot, they should stop insulting our intelligence.

It was staged.
It has never happened that a gang of youths flag down a mobile police vehicle.
They acted on a tip off.
Someone should be sacked and queried for ordering such a weak transportationg
as for the dead man he must have been the ring leader. RIP

@beaf,
you are born with partiality as twins. have you not read my posts on different occassions when i have said it here that boko haram, militants and kidnappers are agents of pdp? all these groups are sponsored and equiped by pdp and jonathan.
were u not here when an iranian arrested over imported weapons, siezed at our seaport escaped from police and immigration?
where u not here when an arrested senator Ndume who was identified even with text massages was given bail?
were u not here when our inspector general Ringim was awarded a national honour in a country where security is the worst in our history?
they know what they are doing. are you not alive when jonathan sent thousands of soldiers to come after innocent citizens protesting insensitivities?
we know everything and they can't decieve us any more.
pdp is a blood thirsty group and will always raise blood by all means.

You are right. I have been searching for other reports on the news and come up with nothing so far. For an event that purportedly too place on Sunday, that certainly is strange.

The story is false. There was a raid on one of his houses at Abaji, thats all.
Police don't need to carry suspects around for raids anyway.

Its rubbish journalism at play again.

Re: Madalla Blast: Detained Suspect Escapes by Nobody: 8:42am On Jan 17, 2012
This write up can't be true, how can a man in chain (handcuffed) escaped just like that? What manner of chaos ensued that all policemen would lose sight of such a high profile fellow? The sorry does not add up: youths saw in him in handcuffs, they probably protested and pronto there was chaos and the superman disappeared? And the suspect escaped unharmed?

A more credible news should simply read: some "policemen" who have infiltrated Nigerian police decided in their own decisive decision to release a suspected Boko Haram under investigation.

Allegations are rife that the purported arrest was a bait to douse tension during the heat of the fuel subsidy crisis.
You will also recall that one Nuhu Mohammed a purported sponsor of Boko haram  members was also arrested
in Chikun local government of Kaduna State, about the same time the Abuja bomber was arrested.

We may well expect Nuhu Mohammed to escape again.

Here is Nuhu Mohammed, supposedly under arrest already, yet no restraint or cuffs on him. . . matter of fact, the mallam is leading armed soldiers in a prayer session, heads bowed and eyes shut.  Tell me why it will be too hard for a smart and agile person not to bolt.  grin   Criminal is leading prayer!

I dont even know if I can call him criminal anymore, the emotions are different from what they were two days ago.  I should call him a saint, yeah, thats what he is . . .a saint!
