The International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of Human Rights Institutions restores the country’s voting rights

Nigeria has reclaimed its former ''A'' status at the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of Human Rights Institutions.

Prof. Bem Angwe, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja.

Nigeria was stripped of its voting rights and downgraded to a “B” status at the ICC in 2008 because of its failure to allow NHRC to operate as an autonomous body.

ICC is the global network of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) set up by the UN to protect and monitor human rights in member states.

The executive secretary said that the signing of the Human Rights Commission Amendment Bill 2010 into law by President Goodluck Jonathan had made the commission more efficient in its operation.

He expressed delight that the content of the new law, particularly as it related to security of tenure, independence for the commission and additional powers of investigation and enforcement, would further strengthen the commission.

“By signing into law the amended National Human Rights Commission Act, Nigeria has already been upgraded.

“And that in itself is a clear demonstration of the willingness and the determination of Nigeria as a country to join other countries of the world in ensuring that the rights of human beings are assured and are protected; that they are guaranteed and would be enforced.”

Angwe reiterated the commission's commitment to upholding the basic rights and freedom of individuals as enshrined in the African Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights.

Speaking on the level of independence of the commission, the executive secretary said that the National Human Rights (Amendment) Act, had given more powers to the commission to enable it to promote and protect the rights of the citizens.

According to him, the Act has also positioned the commission to be able to enforce human rights laws and take actions against anybody found violating such laws.

He assured that the commission would not hesitate to take the appropriate action against government where incidences of human rights violation were established against it.

Another GEJ achievement skipped by his haters.

Whenever any positive article is posted here, outlining GEJ's achievements, it quickly gets relegated to the bottom of the pile.

Now I know Nairaland is made up of 90% GEJ haters grin

Imagine the way GEJ handled the Northern crisis without causing a major war, how smart he was not to fall for the tricks of those devils, how he listened and reinstated the subsidy.

S&P has recently upgraded our credit rating , making Nigeria more attractive to investors, Human rights have improved and the foundation is being laid for development and progress.

Will they allow this guy get on with it undecided Nope.

Same thing the silly republicans did to Obama, infighting, bickering, protesting for no real cause has brought America to it's knees.

We keep copying the west, it was occupy America, and then occupy London, now Nigeria is once again COPYING the west.

Let us be original, calm and supportive of GEJ.

Give him time.
