@op, i agree with you that flag is so bland, It shows too much lack of imaginations. If we have to r.represent for our foliage, one square of that should be enough. More important than the flag is our name Nigeria. The word Nigeria is an insult, a curse. The name was designed by our invaders to assuage their guilt. That is, the insulting and dehumanizing name sorts and exonerate their conscience of their evil intentions. And now that we know, and are supposedly independent, we must reclaim our indigenous identity.

Nigeria has one of the best looking Coat of Arms in the world. I like to know who designed it.

tpiah:

how old are these flags you speak of?

never heard of anything like that though i did a quick search- saw one of the flags but couldnt find any info on the history.

The Benin flag is apparently based on a flag of  Benin captured by British forces during 1897 expedition so I don't know how old it really is.

The green flag of the Sokoto caliphate is as old as Usman dan Fodio's jihad I suppose (around 1800 AD).

But nobody actually uses these flags. Just an interesting historical fact that the two known flags of pre-Nigerian states are worse than the Nigerian one.

@Angelgal
The Angolan flag has a machet (cutlass) on their flag as a symbol. Goes to show you the violence in that country, ravaged by war for several years is well represented even on their flag!

Even the Mozambique flag has two rifles on it.
